  • MTS in low range only ?

We have a 2016 kakadu and went out bush the other day we noticed MTS is only available in lowrange
What about mud and sand ?

My brother has a 2012 SWB with MTS he can select those 2 modes in hi 4
What has changed and why I would think these terrain systems could be helpful in hi range

Correct, MTS works in L4, the off road manual should tell you more.

So why the change from my brothers a few years ago ?
I can see it being an advantage for sand and mud in high range

At high speed it's useless because if you can travel fast your not in difficult slippery terrain.

When the terrain is so hard you have to crawl over it that's when some tricky electronics can help.

Probably still could use a form of assistance for sand and mud in high range as they did for the earlier models
Other sand and mud systems in high range make the throttle more sensitive, allow more wheel slippage and down shift the transmission earlier to maintain higher rpm.

I'm guessing the previous MTS was much the same
Just trying to work out why Toyota dropped high range on the newer 150s as the earlier 150 could select this in high range

I don't think so, the situation you described is achieved simply by turning VSC off and manually shifting the auto (advisable anyway).

Remember, if you are moving freely, then assistance is not required.

That is how some terrain management systems work in high range for sand mode.
Previous 150s were able to select sand and mud in high range

I was not aware turning off VSC would increase the throttle response

Just because you moving at higher speed does not mean You will not suddenly slow and begin to dig in when you hit sections of soft sand the last thing you want to do is stop When you are driving on soft sandy beachs with crossings ect.

              You want to keep speed

A lot of 4wd systems run sand mode in high range.

Any way any idea why Toyota did have this avalible a few years ago on MTS ?

I'd say they realised it was irrelevant so only applied it where it actually might help.

Highly doubt they spent the time and money for it to operate in high range to just ditch it as it did not work if that was the case Toyota would never have released it
