Annoying cracking sound from gear box plastic plate

Hi All,

I bought my Prado brand-new in August 2015 and after a few months started noticing annoying cracking sound coming from gear box plastic plate (the one with gear marks on it). I raised it with the dealer at the first 6 months service but they just indicated that it wasn't reproduced. Second service - they told they disassembled everything to fix it but it still makes this noise.

I can easily reproduce this problem by pressing on the plate - it looks like it's loose and the sound is coming as a result of rubbing of the plate and the frame in which it sits. Also, I can easily stop the noise by putting my hand over the plate during driving so it doesn't vibrate.

I was wondering if anyone has (had) the same problem and whether it was fixed?

Hi and thanks for your reply. I saw this thread but quite sure the sound comes from rubbing of the plate against the frame that holds it in place. But I want to check if I'm wrong and it's the button, however the author of that post doesn't explain how exactly it was fixed...

I thought about using super glue or something around the plate but the car is on warranty - shouldn't it be Toyota's responsibility to fix it?

My fix was a few squirts of silicon spray, which I wouldn't necessarily advocate, but it's what I had at the time. Seems to be drying out though, so on the weekend I'll probably try and jam some soft material in the gap just to stop it rubbing which should do the trick.

I gave up on dealers trying to fix things. Even demonstrated the noisy rear door latch to an adviser who later called me wanting to replace the door spoiler.. The fixes do take time to find and fix though and they've never been where I first thought so I can understand that it's not easy for a tech to find and fix in the very limited time that they have.

Absolutely, that's why my list of options included new clips.
Take it back to them.

You can buy food grade silicone spray from a cabinet making supply.

Agreed most panels on the Prado are kept together with clips. Bet one of them is broken.
