  • Check your spare

I had to remove the spare and cradle on the GXL last week so that the window tint could be done. (They cut the tint on the outside because the window is convex)
There is an issue with overtightning of the bolt that holds the cover on and also the locking nut on the spare.
You wont undo the 12mm bolt that holds the cover on with an open end spanner, it will need a socket and bar.
And now the good part, the locking nut is a very soft alloy nut and when you go to undo it, it squashes and then sheers off leaving a round alloy ring on the stud threads.
So you cant get the spare off.
I took it to the dealer who fixed the problem there and then. He rolled his eyes and told me it is an issue and if these are not backed off by the dealer when the PD is done you will have problems.

Better to find out now than on the side of the road!!

Mine was very easily removed with the spanner in the tool kit.

I guess there is a quality control issue with some being so tight and some like mine only just being nipped up.

I haven't tried to remove the lock on the spare yet.

        Sweetpea

The cover nut is the minor problem, the one to check is the alloy nut under your locking cap which will sheer off if your dealer did not back it off at the PD.

Sounds like your has been done already.

          Spare Tyre Locking Nut

Has anyone else noted that the locking nut on the rear spare wheel requires a different size socket to the standard wheel nuts? I don't think you can open remove it using the standard wheel wrench... Not to cleaver! I do carry a multi size wheel brace and will check the exact sizes at the weekend…

            Re: Spare Tyre Locking Nut

There is a correct size spanner in the included toolkit to undo that nut. Just make sure that they have loosened it at pre-delivery or it will be hard to undo.

              Re: Check your spare

Unfortunatley I can say I have had a blow out on bitumen at 110 with the whole family in the car. It was the left rear tire and we just happened to be coing up to a roadside Parking bay which was very convenient. All went well with the change out of the trye using the user manual to figure out how to get the cover off, (the wife made a lot of comments about a bloke reading a manual, haha) but found the included wheel spanner in the tool box on the rear door undid all the nuts and we were back on the road in around 20 minutes. Getting a new tyre was another issue. It took 2 weeks to come from Victoria!!! That what happens in good old WA I guess.

Also check the tyre pressure in your spare. Mine was well over 50 PSI from factory.

                  Re: Check your spare

Hi everyone,i picked up my prado Thursday 30th june.Anyway i get home and whilst looking around admiring the new wheels,i see a dirty little tech screw in the front right tyre.I Give it a wiggle to see if i might be lucky, not to.So i put the spare on and got the damaged tyre changed over for a cooper st.I was going to do all 5 as that was the original plan after delivery anyway. But the fridge decided to stop working on that day also.So i'll have to wait for my tax cheque to get the other 4 tyres.Funny thing being my last new car got a puncture on the first day aswell.O'h the lock nut nut was not tight either.

                  Cheers
