Playing movies off the USB socket?

Hi all

I tried playing a DIVX movie which was burnt onto a disk and it didn't work in my new standard Kakadu dvd player. I was wondering if I was to get a portable hard drive or a large USB stick and put DVD movies on to it, would it work ? Has any one tried this ?

Howdy - What I did was to copy movies to a hard disk and then play it through a WDTV using the AUX inputs in the back. It disables (at least for me) playing the USB source in front though. In answer to your question, I have not been able to get the unit to recognize a movie on a USB stick - it only finds audio files.

Correct me if I am wrong:

1. Copy DIVX movies to HD from PC
2. Plug WDTV into rear 220v socket for power and AV plugs into centre console.
3. Plug HD into WDTV via USB cord
4. Plug HD into front front USB socket for HD power or does it get it's power from the WDTV?

Power up and use remote to chose movies from menu?

Howdy -
The HD (notebook size) gets USB power from the WDTV. Large size external drives need power - on mine I run an extension cord from the 220v socket in the back and then have a multiplug so I have more outlets (low wattage of course). Works great except I can't listen to the USB source for music while kids watch movies. What I did to get around this is to use a FM transmitter that you can plug a USB stick in. Not great but works.

Since there are AV inputs in the centre console, you could buy a media player the like of the Dvico R-2230 from oo.com.au or www.eljomedia.com.au. Add a 2.5" SATA 500GB HDD into the 2230 and then plug the power supply to the rear 220V socket.

The 2230 is $140 + post and 500GB HDD is ~$85 from MSY.

HI all,
Just got our new Kakadu, I have used a set top box cheap with a USB input and you get TV as well, then plug it into the AV input. Using a 500Gig hard drive the kids get all the movies and no DVD discs in the car. But when you use the AV plug the USB MP3 input is disabled, Next problem. I am going to put all my music on DVD and play it through the DVD player. Everyone wins.
