  • seatbelt ding Quiet at last, in 1 hour 15 mins

This seatbelt ding, was driving me crazy in the past few days. I've tried unplugging the wire under the seat, but then the "inactive airbag" light comes on. Since the "going to the dealer" option isn't available here (dealers in Saudi are there for one thing, selling cars, if something breaks, take it to a shop around the corner), I decided to investigate some more.
After getting the multimeter out, I quickly found, that the old "paperclip in the socket" trick wouldn't work, as it doesn't appear to be an on/of contact switch. So then, I unbolted the seat, subsequently, the seatbelt connector and the attached wire. Took this bit inside to a place were the AC is blowing, and start prying the two cover halves appart. Once I got to the inside of the connector, I found there's no switch, just something that looks like a "reed" contact (usualy operated by a small magnet). I also noted that, in "seatbelt attached" position the magnet was not in front of the contact. After a quick test drive with the contact detached, the problem was solved. Just undo the eletric tape, use a tie-rap to attach the cable plus contact somewhere under your seat.

Good thing is, there's no ding, and also no light on the dashboard and it's reversible, if you ever would wan't to for some reason.

In the attached link, you can see the unclipped connector in the front (why doesn't this board allow uploading in pics?)

what was the reason for doing this again? do you not drive with your seatbelt on? when i go away on trips i sometimes take the belt off when driving around the farm, i just plug it back in and sit on top of it.

what's the reason, people run to their dealer is Australia, to have it turned off?

The description above, is a technical solution. Too many Toyata owners are complaining (not only Prado) that it cannot be turned of. I've read about a mailman, who had to get out every 50meters, or a farmer, who has to open/close several fences while driving on his property. As for myself, I'm in the pipeline construction buisiness, and don't wear a seatbelt, driving off-road from crew to crew, and don't need to be reminded to wear one on-road

Nice write up Mikey. If the dealer wasnt going to do it for mine i was going to go at it with a hammer. This solution looks slightly more elegant than the hammer would of.

One question though, and im sure I know the answer, but just out of curiosity, would this have any effect on the airbags, or is there a separate sensor which checks if the seat is in use? hence whether to activate the air bag or not.

It doesn't display an "inactive airbag" light in the dashboard, like it would when you just unplug the seatbelt buckle connector. So I assume averthing is OK. Also, if you look under your seat, you will see 3 connectors; a white one, a grey one and a yellow one. Yellow connectors and wiring are always related to the airbag system. In the method described my me, you only touch the middle "grey" connector. Leaving the aribag system untouched. There's no reason the airbag system doesn't work, as no wires are cut anywere, the system just gets a reading "seatbelt buckled up", when it's not in reality.

i haven't heard of anyone running to their dealer in australia and asking to have it turned off. you are the first person that i heard of that has wanted it turned off. i wasn't at all saying you shouldn't do it, heck, i can see good reason for it myself. my reply was to get more information on your reason. i was merely suggesting that if you are only trying to get the buzzer to not work for a small amount of time, sit on the seat belt. if you are doing it for a longer period, this is one way to do it for yourself when a dealer option isn't available.

Both myself & Mazza on here have both requested and had them turned off. A search on her or other 4x4 forums will show there is a fair few that are looking for a way and asking dealers. Just a FYI

I don't mind the driver side one beeper, as I pretty much always have my seatbelt on, but the passenger side on annoys the crap out of me. If you place anything heavier than 2kg on the passenger seat (for instance, two cameras with telephoto lenses attached), then the damn thing beeps at random when turning corners (the centripetal force from the cornering must exert just enough on the gear on the seat to set off the beeper).

passenger seat is even easier, pull the grey connector from under the seat, and your done (only the drivers seat causes the airbag system to report an error once it's unplugged).

Go to a wreckers and get the seat belt plug without the seat belt.

                    Plug this in.

had no doubt there were others, i just had heard of anyone else. no need to search - if he tells me there are others, i believe him.

nothing sinister in my reply to anything here - just curiosity.

Same here, had to put a solid argument, but it does state in the manual they can do it.

As to why, I often tow a boat around a caravan park and park the trailer when launching the boat. The noise was enough to drive me to distraction. I choose to wear a seatbelt when driving on the roads.

Got both seats doen as I put paperwork on the passenger seat and that is enough to set it off while driving and you have to stop to shut it off.

Different strokes for different folks, but check out the customisations that you can get done to the computer.

There are a few nifty bits.

                          Cheers

this is good news. I've only had the 150 for a few weeks and it's been driving me nuts. crapped myself a couple of times when putting a laptop bag on seat or shopping and suddenly loud beeping. almost had an accident looking for an engine warning light

over the weekend we were doing lots of driving without seatbelts preparing for an event - taking down signs, etc and generally moving around the place. fairly annoying. On fraser it was a bit annoying too - sometimes you just want to move the car (say to help someone out, but friggin beeping annoying).

I would prefer it not to have the alarm. red light is enough.
