  • Interior plastic finish rubbing off, have a look at yours

The GXL Auto I have has 2500k's on the clock and just yesterday I noticed what looked like the painted finish on the gear shift having a scratch on it. I rubbed the mark with my thumb and to my surprise the painted finish just started to rub off leaving the silver underneath exposed. I checked the other plastic surfaces in the front and what do you know the finish had also worn off on the drivers side door handle and it had started on the passenger side door handle. Not being all that impressed I took it back to Toyota today . The warranty manager inspected the car and without a hesitation has now ordered the parts for replacement. Being a Toyota man I was a little concerned and no the interior had not been cleaned since delivery. I hope this is not a common problem but may pay to keep an eye on it. The sooner you take the vehicle back the better. I haven't worked out how to post pictures yet but I can assure you the wear mark are very noticeable.

Re: Interior plastic finish rubbing off, have a look at yours

I had/have some minor issues with the interior of my GXL auto:

    - Indentation to the center console top molding (fixed under warantee)
    - Plastic pockets to sun visors all stretched (annoying but probably won't worry about fixing)
    - Very minor mark on the front of the steering wheel that is only visible when the light shines a certain way (I won't worry about it)

It seems that they don't look after the cars well pre-delivery (PD) to the dealer and then the dealer doesn't check the cars very well at PD to the customer. I have a scratch on the rear glass that was not picked up in the PD and the tyres were left at 59 PSI  I thought the steering felt odd and checked them when I got home and thought wow that's great what if I hadn't checked!.

"the painted finish just started to rub off"

so it looks like they carried over some interior features from the 120 to the 150

My 150 GXL gear knob started to show signs of wear at 1000klm along with the driver and passenger interior door handles. I am travelling around Oz and clocking up the klicks fast, will try and get Toyota to fix at next service. And I thought Toyotas were well built! :?

yeah mine are wearing too but most of it from my carelessness. I remember in my 120 i was going to put some brushed aluminium wrap on and when i sprayed alcohol onto the trims to clean them the silver literally washed off! Shocking but it just goes to show what happens when they don't lacquer it.

im just going to wait until i cant bear it anymore and then either use a high quality wrap or pay to have them properly sprayed with a tough lacquer....maybe in a fancy colour too....

                Happened to mine too.

The damage to mine was caused by Bushmans spray! (similar to aerogard)

It has had a 'thinners like' effect on the silver painted plastic interior door handles.

If you go fishing/camping and you spray it all over yourself, try not to get it on your interior! It is pretty strong stuff.

Yep sadly common problem, my silver lasted a bit longer with the 120, but was looking sad, so just covered all the silver bits with carbon fibre wrap.
