  • New to 4WDing

picked up our first "real" 4wd last weekend - previously owned a nissan x-trail. as we are 4wd novices, we are nervous about taking a $70k car off road. however, ultimately, this is what we bought a prado for, as well as being a nice everyday family car.

fortunately for us, one week into owning a prado, we were able to take it for a nice little 900km round trip to stanthorpe, including some dirt tracks along the way. first thing we noticed was how cold it was there!!

-3 degrees overnight. still -1 at 6.30am when photo taken

ice all over car. mirror in this photo

i took some photos to try and demonstrate the wheel articulation.

girraween national park - we were tickled by how level the prado sat in the carpark, when all the other cars were leaning. (excuse my not so level photography)

    sommerville tourist park

at the end of our trip, i convinced my wife that we should attempt our first water crossing. it was also the first time we've used low range. with stock tyres (at full pressure) and a driver (me) not really knowing what to do, we gave it a crack - albeit a pretty easy crossing. we decided not to venture too far up codamine river road - we'll leave this for another time when we have a second car accompanying us.

preparing for our first ever water crossing

    taking the plunge

    enjoying our new found hobby

and this photo is all about the prado being in its element

i am pleased to report that my 17 month old happily slept through dirt road corrugations. a real tribute to how well the toyota suspension soaks up the bumps. although some aftermarket suspension might not do this as well, it will however reduce the body roll, of which the toyota has plenty.

any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    cheers,
    louie

    New to 4WDing

Good to see you enjoying your new 4wd. We pick up our new V6 GXL this week after having an NS Pajero for the last 3.5 years.

O would highly recommend doing a 4wd course. My wife and I did one when we first got the Paj and it ws great. Let's you learn the capabilities of your vehicle and gives you the confidence to use it off road. It also shows you the correct techniques and doesn't let you form bad habits.

    Cheers, Sam.

      Re: New to 4WDing

      Good start
Just a small point, From the pics you may be taking the water crossing a little fast ( well you asked for advice  )
Don't believe the ads that show 4WDs ploughing through water and mud at great speed. It's much better for the vehicle and the environment to take it at a careful pace.
Your Prado is capable of handling much more difficult terrain - but if you intend getting more adventurous, it is highly recommended you join a 4WD club or do a 4WD course.
      Cheers, Wayne

        Re: New to 4WDing

thanks for the advice guys! a mate of mine did a course at mt cotton and got a lot out of it.

having never used low range before and coming from a nissan x-trail, i guess i'm used to a "speed conquers all" approach (trust me only way to get x-trail across the beach at straddie). with some nerves out of the way now, next time i'll take it easy and trust the low range to pull me through.

also, next time i go out, i plan on going with more experienced 4WDers.

          Hi Louie

Keep an eye on the Qld trip reports section as there are a quite active bunch of day trippers that would be happy to share some knowledge.
