  • Electronic systems and interference ?

Hi, just joined here and just picked up my GX 150 diesel auto.
I had a 97' Prado manual from new and just sold it after 13 years of troublefree touring Oz with a Shippe Shape rooftop tent.
I want to install a UHF radio (GME) and dual battery system however reading the manual on page 20 it states that the installation of mobile two-way radios may affect several onboard systems ! ?

I see here in posts others have installed UHF radios however I am concerned about Toyota mentioning this as a warning and ask you comments please.

    Thanks in advance,

BTW, I also found the 1500 RPM humming at 80 K/hr which others here have mentioned.

      Hi Scoop,

Standard disclaimer, as long as you use good RF installation practices your unlikely to have any problems.

I have a UHF CB, an amateur UHF/VHF/HF and a HF radio rigs installed and have had no issues with
      any of them.

Just take a little care when you install it, best to run power cables directly to the battery terminals
and try to avoid running power cables and antenna cables along side airbag or engine management
wiring if possible. Make sure antenna bases are properly grounded.

The above applies more to high power transceivers but it doesn't hurt to get into a good routine.

      Cheers

I read a post somewhere where a DIY install of a radio ended up with all the airbags deployed when the transmit button was pressed.

Yes I have seen this before, I believe if you do some research you
will find that they connected the radio somehow to the airbag wiring
bus, any wonder the the airbags went off!

The police and emergency services all have Prado's albiet most likely 120
and they have no issues also. It all gets back to installing things correctly.

Cars electornics are designed to be robust, for instance if you go up to
Mt Dondenong in Melbourne and park under the TV transmitter towers
one can only imagine the RF field the vehicle would be subjected to, but have
you read of any airbag explosions regarding same. Also if you pull up beside
another cars antenna that is transmitting, the RF field induced into your car is probably
greater than theirs as their cars body work is acting as a ground plane and
          shielding their electrics somewhat.

          Cheers

When wiring accessories, take a new 4mm wire directly off the battery, and install an in-line fuse. It is a good idea NOT to pick up power off any old wire under the bonnet as you won't know what it is unless you have the complete vehicle wiring diagram.
