Re: When is the new generation Prado due?
The reality is that the 120's are still disappearing from Toyota yards. It's not like it was last year when I bought mine, as the dealership I bought it from now has a decent swag of brand spanking new one's sitting in the yard waiting to be sold. Probably the economic downturn has something to do with this. But I still see enough brand spankers on the road though. While the 120's still sell well I really don't think we'll see the next model. I get comments every other day about how good the 120 looks and I haven't even finished with the mods. There are that many 120's on the road at the moment, It seems they are enjoying a popularity surge of a sort. Probably mining boom driven where people had a lot more money to spend. The point is that I think Toyota will not bring out the new model while they can still sell the 120's in significant numbers. My opinion only.
If you want the new model you have some things to consider. First of all, Toyota Australia have said absolutely nothing about the next Prado model. Rumour may suggest late 09 early 2010. Maybe, mabe not. There's a bit of stuff kicking around the net but nothing concrete. The point is you could be waiting a long time. Of course, Toyota may announce the new model tomorrow too, but I see that as extremely unlikely while the 120 still sells well. If you always wait for the next update you will never buy.
The next thing to consider is that the first batch of a brand new model invariably has issues. Even Toyota suffers this. Generally, it's a good idea to let the first batch be bought by someone else. Let them jump up and down outside the dealership over the problems they found with the new model. You buy the 2nd or 3rd generation when a good swag of issues have been ironed out.
When the new model arrives, it's entirely possible that the 120's will go into some sort of runout phase with some pretty good deals that might be hard to pass up. I suppose this depends how many 120's Toyota Australia has to sell at the time.
If you can get an extra year out of a current 4WD without issue then you could wait and see. If you're 4WDless right now and want to get out there then go buy a 120 right now. That's what I'd do.
