  • Re: When is the new generation Prado due?

The reality is that the 120's are still disappearing from Toyota yards. It's not like it was last year when I bought mine, as the dealership I bought it from now has a decent swag of brand spanking new one's sitting in the yard waiting to be sold. Probably the economic downturn has something to do with this. But I still see enough brand spankers on the road though. While the 120's still sell well I really don't think we'll see the next model. I get comments every other day about how good the 120 looks and I haven't even finished with the mods. There are that many 120's on the road at the moment, It seems they are enjoying a popularity surge of a sort. Probably mining boom driven where people had a lot more money to spend. The point is that I think Toyota will not bring out the new model while they can still sell the 120's in significant numbers. My opinion only.

If you want the new model you have some things to consider. First of all, Toyota Australia have said absolutely nothing about the next Prado model. Rumour may suggest late 09 early 2010. Maybe, mabe not. There's a bit of stuff kicking around the net but nothing concrete. The point is you could be waiting a long time. Of course, Toyota may announce the new model tomorrow too, but I see that as extremely unlikely while the 120 still sells well. If you always wait for the next update you will never buy.

The next thing to consider is that the first batch of a brand new model invariably has issues. Even Toyota suffers this. Generally, it's a good idea to let the first batch be bought by someone else. Let them jump up and down outside the dealership over the problems they found with the new model. You buy the 2nd or 3rd generation when a good swag of issues have been ironed out.

When the new model arrives, it's entirely possible that the 120's will go into some sort of runout phase with some pretty good deals that might be hard to pass up. I suppose this depends how many 120's Toyota Australia has to sell at the time.

If you can get an extra year out of a current 4WD without issue then you could wait and see. If you're 4WDless right now and want to get out there then go buy a 120 right now. That's what I'd do.

Iron-Paww has hit it right on the head.

Just look at when they brought out the all new 120 - and how many minor and major problems and fixes happened in the first couple of facelifts to now when they have a pretty much perfect product.

Whenever a manufacturer creates an 'all new' product / shell etc they literally have no time to get it to the market - otherwise they end up spending too much on R&D before any return.

Same with all products - say, Iphone, Vista etc etc...... its not until there are a few thousand people using the product doing different things that they can work out what needs to be refined / where issues lay.

So - if you can wait until the new one is out for a year - then wait - otherwise hop into a pretty good machine - I am glad I did!

I wouldn't sweat it. Buy one when you need it.

What will the new model have when it comes? It will probably be slightly larger, and slightly heavier. (remember when a Corolla was a small car?) It will look different (more rounded) if it follows the family trend shown in the LC200 and Rav, but it will basically be the same vehicle under the skin. It may lose some features like the LR Tank, but hopefully gain others (hopefully it will get decent drink holders in the rear) Toyota is pretty smart, they are unlikely to change a winning formula too much.

          Totally agree on that.

One thing for sure is the 4D4 Engine will carry on to the newer model and the petrol may get the V6 that's in the kluger.. more powerfull than the current 4.0

Yeah, I really wouldn't be surprised to see the long range tanks go. However, Toyota is smart when it comes to selling vehicles to a particular market. I wouldn't be surprised if the long range tanks become an option on the Std, GX, and GXL's. You'd order it like that from the factory and still have the spare on the back door. Really, the majority of Prado owners do not need long range tanks. Everyone who reads this forum certainly gets a lot out of them but Mr Urban workerbee does not. The ability to customize as much as possible to individual needs can only sell more units at the end of the day. Mr Toyota is smart......

I also wouldn't be surprised to see the Prado gain a bit of weight and some extra curves. That's the way the LC200, Kluger, and Rav's have gone. Mix those together, blend in a bit of the current Prado shape and you've got the next model.........

The next generation Prado has been involved in long range durability testing in the Aussie outback for a while now. Word is that there will be a V6 D4D engine under the bonnet and from those that have driven the beast, say the jump in performance up from the current D4D 4 cylinder, is equivalent to the jump from the 1KZ to the D4D.

              will be worth waiting for.

I know this picture has been displayed previously but now hot off the press, it has been confirmed (not prepared to say who), but guaranteed accurate, as the body shape for the new model Prado due out around Sept 09. Essentially the info has it that the rear seats do fold away into the floor and it is a seven seat vehicle instead of eight. The information also advises that there will still be two fuel tanks but of smaller capacity than the current model. The Oz model will have side steps and mud flaps and 6 air bags and probably a beefier front bumper. There will not be an engine/transmission change so you can forget about V8 or V6 diesel engines for the first series anyway.

Looks like a mini cruiser. If Toyota is intending on reducing the seating capacity and fuel capacity... then I'm very glad that I got mine when I did as these were a couple of the main reasons why I chose the Prado over others.

Ditto to that NT. Glad I got one of the last generation 120's.
Not so much the seating capacity, but definitely the tank litreage was a biggy.

Optomistic but doable. My son had his birthday party yesterday and it was great to take him and six of his mates (with me driving of course) out to the Cinema, Maccas, etc. It may have been a full car, but at least we all travelled safely, in comfort (with rear air-con) and of course Prado style!!! 8)

The front end of this vehicle does not resemble a 200 but the rear certainly looks like a kluger.

Any news on the suspension setup? Are they keeping the current setup or going fully independent all round; like the pajero?

Good luck fitting a bullbar to that thing, will be like the current 200 series where you have to cut the original bumper to keep it flush under the headlights and grille.

why cant toyota just make em straight across under the headlights? surely we arent the only market that fits bullbars?
