  • You learn something new every day!

Just learnt two new things about the Prado today.

    1. After reading the latest 4X4 Australia magazine (what a great writeup the Prado gets), I learnt that you can engage low range without the centre diff lock engaged. I just presumed it would automatically engage the centre diff lock when low range was selected (as my old Pajero did). This is great for when retrieving a boat from a steep ramp or manoeuvring a trailer up a steep driveway without having to worry about transmission wind up.

    2. You can turn both TRC (Traction Control) and VCS (Vehicle Stability Control) off. I only thought you could turn the TRC off. If you press the button (left hand side of steering wheel) once quickly, it turns off TRC, but, if you press and hold it for 3 seconds, it turns TRC and VSC off. Perfect for sand driving!

Most of you probably already know these things but I thought maybe someone didn't. It is a very well thought out 4wd system on the Prados!

    Cheers, Sam.

D4D, you have a 120 series, how do you engage low range without the centre diff locked?

Drop the transfer case lever into low range without pressing the centre diff lock button

        I don't have a TRC button just a DAC button so '2' won't work

Yes true, and the best thing is, this also works in Hi and low gear. So I can use it to have some fun in the snow (and we will have snow in germany!).

Can you post a pic of your gear lever area? I'm curious as I thought the transfer case lever would have been the same for all GXLs, but it appears that yours has the system on the Grande. What exactly do you get with Option Pack 1?

OP 1 on a 120 GXL gave you

                    Traction Control
                    Stability Control
Downhill Ascent Control (DAC ) - there's a seperate button for that
                    Side and Curtain Airbags

It virtually makes it a VX without the leather.
However if you don't have it, you can't get it - it is a factory only option.
All became standard on the 150 of course.

                    .
                    Cheers, Wayne

So does D4D's transfer case lever have H, N, L on it?

                        120 or 150 ?

120 auto does, plus a CDL button and if you have OP1, a DAC button, that's all.

But since this is a 150 thread, getting off track.
                        Cheers, Wayne

I was driving on sand last sunday at Kinkuna with the TRC off and still got an alarm beep every time the wheels spun. Now it makes sense. I will try disabling VCS next time I am on sand.

                              thanx
