  • Who's got a TD Manual Prado ?

    Hi Guys,

Seems like most 150 TD owners have Auto's which is cool, does anyone have TD manual ? If so are you happy with the choice ?

    cheers
    Rob

I have mate. Never been a big fan of autos, Always changing back and reving its tits off and they have to suck a bit of power out of the system, eventho the new ones are better. On paper the auto is better on fuel but it would be the first car that I know that is. I like the 6 speed for towing and 4x4 bush work. I did go to Melbourne where i can see a auto would be better in stop start traffic. But I live in Cobar, so no traffice issues here.

      Hi Bigs,

My current car is an Auto, so I'm ready to go "backwards" and go manual. Its got much better low range gearing for serious downhill stuff, I cant see how the auto would yield greater fuel economy maybe so but I feel I've got more control in the manual.

      cheers

Hi RPTDprado. Traditionally, auto gearboxes with lock-up torque convertors have had higher overall gearing which gives lower engine revs at any given speed once you are on the open road with the convertor locked up. In a cruising situation on highway use, it will be more fuel efficient. The same cannot be said if you are towing or in a lower speed situation on windy road where a manual can tool along in a tall gear with no drive slip. I drive a manual KZJ95R because of the area I live in (windy/hilly and large no. of limited speed zones) but if I lived in the city give me an auto every time. Cheers, Derb.

Re: Who's got a TD Manual Prado ?

I have just changed from a GXL Manual TD 150 to a Kakadu Auto.... I had a manual TD 90 series pre the 150 series. I found the manual 150 wouldn't pull the boat up the ramp as well as the 90 series and preferred low range. I also made the mistake of getting older between the 90 and 150 series and found reversing at the boat ramp with the manual was more hassle than I need. First impressions (and its early days) but with the manual around the sunny coast roads and occasional trip to Bris Vegas down to as low as 8.2 L/100 and never above 9l/100. The Auto admittedly 100Kg more car but so far around 10L/100 but its still a new vehicle with under 3000 on the clock...... However stepping into the Kakadu is a totally different experiance and I would not have believed that the two vehicles could be so different. Forget about the electronic package (although pretty nifty) the Kakadu is quieter, more refined and love the comfort setting where it just smooths out all the road ripples.

              150 GXL Manual

Reason: Wife hates manuals and would not consider an auto at all. No skin off my nose I prefermanual and the better lower range gearing.

I think the fuel economy difference comes down to the way they can electronically control the shift points on the auto - also leading to the mid range vibrations and auto overheats that they have experienced.

At least with the manual you are in control of the shift points.

25000kms and most happy with the choice and how it works (excpet when stuck in traffic but I try to avoid that)

                    Me too.

In germany most of them are auto. The dealer suggested, not to order a manual, because he said I would regret it later. Also, selling the car would be difficult.

But I used to drive manual cars all my life, so I ordered the manual. I hate it when the car shifts at a point where I would not shift. First I was a little afraid, that I had to do a lot of shifting while driving into the alps during vacation, on some long winding roads etc. Also, I was not sure if I could get difficulties driving offroad.

Luckily, the opposite thing happened: I was blown away how relaxed my 150 drives for a manual. With itīs big momentum and low rpm-torque it could be driven without shifting through corners and uphills. Very relaxed and no need to shift all the time. Going offroad was also a blast, I had a very steep descent on a gravel road where I crawled down to the bottom in 1st low without touching the brake pedal. Very impressive, I am quite happy with my choice, no regrets .....

                    Pete
