Dave your mate is spot on saying a hi-flow cat doesn't function as well in one regard but dead wrong in another, what he must be talking about is it's ability to burn off the toxins in the exhaust gas because they have less cells per cm2 in the hi-flow cat.
But as far as letting your engine breath by expelling the exhaust gasses hi-flow cats work much better, so I still can't see why it would effect warranty. Don't worry i'm going to hit my dealership up with the question again to see if I get a different answer form a different person, but the guy I asked is their workshop foreman.

The cat works like pouring water through a piece of gauze, the tighter and smaller the squares in the gauze the slower the water will pour through but the better it will be filtered. That's all a cat is, a big filter that the exhaust gas also heats up causing it to burn particles off in the gas as they pass through it. SO the less cells per cm2 the less resistance and the higher the flow and the less toxins get burned off.

Here's the thing, Taipan XP have the best dump pipes out in the market place, in my opinion. There flanges are not that good, but when I had my 150, never had a problem going across the Simo and doing 9,000 kms on that trip in 2010.
I had their full high flow system in 3" stainless steel.
Moving on to this year, I have seen a few problems, and heard of a few problems, especially in the 120 models with the XP system.
A lot of members just change out the muffler to a high flow one, but there is still the restriction with the genuine dump pipe.
I reckon a Taipan XP dump pipe with a XP high flow muffler fitted to the genuine system might be the go. This does still give you a restriction at the back of the dump pipe though.
I will do some research and let you know Outback, and other members that are interested.

Just thought to bump this old thread up and contribute



I had a 14 inch oval resonator put in today replacing the main standard muffler. Its just a sports muffler which means its almost a straight through, but not quite, so it takes the bark out completely.

Power wise, who knows, but I does seem to breath a bit better, dont forget the exhaust gas still needs to get through the CAT first which would be the biggest restriction in the system. Noise wise there is a slight burble but hardly noticeable in the cabin.

Only cost $150 fitted.

After driving a bit more today, can definatly notice a bit more up and go, especially when the TC is locked up. Overall very happy with the $150 spent.

Can recommend Leonard Exhaust in Coffs. Just good to deal with and honest.

About the same size as my main, except mine is a straight flow, which is why I needed the small reasonator just before the end.
