  • ARB Twin motor air compressor install under driver seat 150 series

    G'day all!
just some ffod for thought for people wondering where to mount an ARB on board twin motor air compressor. Not wanting to mount on a bracket under the bonnet because of limited space and also to keep comp cool and clean, I have mounted mine under the drivers seat where it just fits in nicely and has air con vents blowing over it as an added bonus.

A couple of small mods to comp is all thats needed. Firstly lenghthen the two power cables and one negative cable ( using same or larger diameter cable keeping fuse nearest to battery) by joining with copper cable links ( found right size links at battery world) and crimp with hydraulic crimper from local auto sparkie and heat shrink, or alternatively join by soldering and heat shrink ( harder to heat cable right thru to allow solder to run thru it, easier to crimp) and route thru fire wall grommet and under drivers door sill and under seat

Secondly take out hose connector from top of comp and replace with a 3/4' nipple and elbow air fittings and screw the hose connector back in to the elbow. the comp can now fit under the seat with the hose easy to connect and disconnect ( hose kept under 2nd row seat )

The power pick up for the switch can be taken from any power you prefer but I just ran a new positive with 5amp fuse to battery ( no splicing into vehicle's wiring) and left switch under seat

fairly easy to do and wiring diagram with comp is staright forward

Hey there Sunchaser, I have measured up this mod a few weeks ago looking for a location for one of those compressors. I came to the conclusion that it would fit, I tried passenger side seat location. From what your saying your not running it for a locker? I think the manifold would not fit under the seat with the compressor. Any thoughts?
Also do you have nuisance tripping of the fuse? 5 amps is not very big for a motor of that capacity. Under load the specification would suggest 50 amps. Also I would love a photo to get it in my head what it would look like, Cheers, mmm beer.

The switch is not routing the power to the compressor just the relays so 5A is fine. The actual power lines are 2 x 40A from memory. If you don't have room or want to fit the compressor under the bonnet (you can see where I put mine under the bonnet in my build) check out ages install in the space behind the rear panels.

        G'day Pearl150,

I'm not running lockers just the hose, but I think you could fit the manifold by using the small elbow fitting I described above then screwing in the ARB manifold flexible steel hose to the elbow. I don't think the steel hose straight into the compressor would fit under the seat as the elbow is quite large.
I used the driver's seat as it can be raised slightly to allow the comp to fit under. If your particularly tall and need the seat fully lowered it may put pressure on the elbow and end up causing problems. My seat is raised up only a small amount and the underneith of the seat just touches the top of the elbow, but when I use it I like to fully raise the seat to allow air flow over the elbow as it gets very hot.
As mjrandom said there is two power cables, one to each motor with it's own 40 amp fuse, you need to run a small wire with 5 amp fuse to the rocker switch the instructions suppllied show the wire colour on the switch for the power for it. there is another colour wire you dont need to use which is just for a little light inside the rocker switch to show you've switched it on. There's two relays inside the cover of the comp that the rocker switch energises that allows the main power to run the motors.
I'll take some photo's and work out how to post them for you. Sunchaser

Ok first go at posting photo's,

Compressor with fully raised and pushed forward seat showing brass air fitting elbow, extension piece to make it easier to reach connector, and hose connector joined to extension piece and rocker switch on left

compressor under seat in driving position

two supplied 40 amp fuses, supplied earth lead and 5 amp fuse not supplied for switch power

Hope this helps any questions just ask

You may need a heat shield as these compressors get very hot if used for a period of time.

Just a reminder of the giant void under the third row LH cup holder, perfect for a air compressor.

                  Thanks Sunchaser,
Very happy with your reply, I miss read your post and apologise for thinking 5 amp fuse was installed on the motor circuit, your clearly talking about the control circuit. Now that I have seen your installation I think that it is a corker and well done on the photos. Something that I will have to learn to do myself at some stage.
                  Thanks again, Tony.

                    No probs Tony,

Sending the photo's was quite easy! Just looked up how to post pictures and followed the instructions and it actually worked!!!! Wonders will never cease.....
Think I'll heed Winstons suggestion and put some thermal lagging on elbow as it does get very hot.

                    All the best Sunchaser
