The best way of getting drawers to go in smoothly with no dramas is to buy some ready made and have them installed, lol. I thought long and hard about building some and looked around the shed at a couple of other failed/unfinished projects and decided to order some drawers from Drifta, they go in on the 26th of this month. Will post pics when done.

Finally just finished my DIY draws... I've had the main drawers in for over a year now but only just made the side panels. I have installed the draws using quick latches with hooks so they lock onto the factory luggage hooks. I can have the draws out within 5mins if i need to and the cargo barrier out in another 10.
Straps, shackles and tow bar stored in the left hand side.. Compressor and jump leads in the right.

          Lookin good!.....

Just curious as to what supports your side panels on the outer edge to stop them from falling down?

Thanks Rob... I used a 700mm piano hinge and it is actually ridged enough with just the the front panel. If i wanted to be extra secure, i goes i could just cut another support leg for the rear. I've used 18mm Ply so it doesn't flex very much.

Awesome drawers. Definitely the way to do it. I would love drawers but need the rear seats too often unfortunately. They look better than anything I've seen in the shops !

Now that is a drawer system that I have been looking for, I am keen to get some drawers to store the usual bits and pieces and more importantly attach the fridge slide to, but I also want to be able to use the rear seats if I need to, pity none of the commercial manufacturers have this option (that I can find).
How did you secure the drawers to the factory tie downs ( any chance of a picture or where you got them) I am dubious about my ability to make a set of drawers but may have a crack initially at mounting a flat sheet over the seats with the fridge slide attached.
This will also mean that my old dog can still climb in the back while she is around, even if she has to share with the fridge.
                Kev,

For those that have removed the rear seats, how have you secured your drawers to the floor? Did you just use the 4 seat mounting points towards the rear or have you somehow utilised the front bolts as well? I've just removed my seats today and am just working out a game plan on how I'm going to build and fit my drawers/fridge slide.

                  Cheers,
                  Dave.

Sorry if this is a bit late thrasherdave, but I have done similar things using PowerPoint. I create a presentation of several slides and use the drawing tools in PowerPoint to add text boxes, arrows and lines (see my recent post on aluminium framed drawer system in the P150 Modifications section). After creating the slides, use SaveAs to save as JPEGs. Each slide is written out as a separate jpeg picture file, then include them in your post the usual way.

Looks good ABR-SIDEWINDER. What make is your cargo barrier? I have a 150 series GX 7 seater and am leaning towards retaining the 3rd row seats, including a cargo barrier (like yours) and possibly making drawers (like yours). Previously I have seen cargo barriers anchored onto the folded 3rd row seats, but others anchored to the wheel arch area. Yours seems to have neither of those anchor points?!

I made some enquiries for a wedge design drawer system to level the floor out but was quoted $1400.00 + freight and decided to make my own. Cost $400.00

The weight of the drawers, fridge and recovery gear has also leveled out the suspension nicely.

Here are the photo's, I am just waiting on the stainless steel latches to arrive so I can finish them off.

I though it was a great idea having recovery gear neatly stored in rear draws until I was passenger in a 4wd bogged in a mud hole. Another 4wd tried to snatch it out but did not work. Next option was winch. My mate then said winch control, tree trunk protector were neatly packed in the rear draws. By this stage mud level was a few inches above the bottom of the rear door plus rear of 4wd was close to a steep bank so door was unlikely to open far enough to open the draw. Then drives remembered he had taken a bag with some of recovery out of the draws before we headed out. He crawled into back of car (no cargo barrier) and luckily winch controller was in the bag. Can now say even Jeeps get bogged.
So remember to take recovery gear out of draws before heading out on the tracks.

I agree with peter2904 that recovery gear should be readily accessible in all conditions. The drawers on my 150 have limited access at times especially the one on the drivers side.

I used to drive/travel in vehicles that were sometimes in danger of going through ice and becoming a temporary boat, they were capable of floating. All recovery (and survival) gear was stored on the roof racks as when floating the rear cab doors were below the waterline. Entry and exit (sometimes hurried) to front cab was through roof hatches when floating.

Not strictly relevant to Australian 4wd conditions but shows the necessity of thinking and planning for the conditions likely to be encountered.

                                Cheers
