  • suspension hight post bullbar fitting

    gday guys, fingers crossed within 2 weeks should have arb delux bar fitted to car, what sort of drop in hieght should i expect from the standard front suspension, will be getting a 50mm oem lift in the future, will it be drastic, should i fit some coil spacers to compensate till lift done, many thanks

    Just got my ARB bar on yesterday. I didn't get a measurement before fitted but running a tape from the bottom edge of the rim throught the centre of the hub to the bottom of the guard it measures 749mm now bar is on. This is on a GXL with currently standard suspension.

      thanks for that, my measure in the drive (not quite flat) i get 770mm so about a 21mm difference, not to bad but spose it may settle with time

        mmm... interesting. Soon going to order a new 150 GXL TD. Straight away I was going to have an ARB Deluxe bar & dual battery fitted but no winch. I was anticipating that I was going to have to put new OME springs & shocks in at the same time, but it looks like I'll be able to suck it and see first. I had to fit OME springs & shocks on my new 2007 Hilux at the same time as the deluxe bar & battery as the drop was huge and the 'Lux suffers from ground clearance out of the factory anyway.

        Anyway, looks like there's a few bucks I don't have to spend straight away. Just bar & battery!

        Or maybe there's other opinions on this? Camping & light touring is my game - not extreme off-roading through the forrests.

          All that weight over the front mucks up the handling and accentuates nose diving. Also, camping and light touring = lots of weight in the rear. I reckon suspension upgrade is the most important modification on a 4by as Toyota do not provide suspension that caters for load hauling or outback terrain. I guess you can always see how you go on the standard setup and go from there.

            If you look at the post suspension Kakadu then I have posted some before and after measurements with my ARB Saraha bar without a winch. I would be interested if you could do the same when your bar goes on to get a comparison. My measures are from the bottom of the guard to the floor.
            I also have two batteries and have yet to change suspension. ARB will not touch the suspensiopn with a Kakadu.

              KJA, that is not a good way of measuring for comparo purposes, as variations in tyre pressure or size would affect the height.

              Most people around here measure from bottom of wheel rim through the centre to the wheel arch, however this does not cater for differences in wheel size. Now that Toyota is fitting 18 inch wheels to VX and above we will need to start measuring from the centre of the hub to the wheel arch for comparison against different models.

              Not sure why you want to compare your ride height my mine? I already have a bar and aftermarket suspension fitted.

                You are right in the comparo stakes. The 18" rims make the measurement from the guard to the bottom of the rim not a true comparo either so that is why for mine I went to the floor etc. Mine was really just to see the differnce the bar made to the heights. As you can see the front seems to have dropped by 10mm and the bum up by 10mm. I was wondering if this was the same for yours before you did the lift and others. I agree about measuring from the centre of the hub to get a comparison with different models etc.

                  only 1 way to measure and thats bottom of rim to guard... its a solid line... the centre diff line well its about .... there somewhere

                  not hard when comparing 17 vs 18 either, what with having to take 12.7mm (half an inch) off the measured height on a 18 to compare it to a 17, thats some serious math right there :wink:


                  And to get back to the topic, mine has dropped by around 10mm as well with an arb deluxe winch bar fitted

                    Oh well being a retired science and maths teacher then you can't overwork the brain in retirement.
                    Thanks for the info re 10mm drop. I am planning to put the OME kit on the Kakadu soon and we will see how it goes. (Giles from Mannell motors has convinced me that all will be OK)
