  • Going from 18" to 17" on my Kakadu...which tyre ?

I am looking at setting up a second set of wheels just for off road excursions but cant pin down a tyre...I want to set up some 17's and have a nice big tyre that gives a bit more clearance and side wall etc, since they wont be on the car all that often a big diameter and legalities is not a major concern. I mostly do sand driving so want a nice big tyre (not so big it rubs) I like an aggressive tyre for those outings requiring a more chunky tyre but have heard mudders or just aggressive tyres don't work well in sand....is that a myth ?

Strongly considering Mickey thompson STZ 275-70-17's ????

Ive never had a problem, just get your tyre pressure down, and you wont have too many problems at all. As for tyres Im close to making a decision on a 275/70/17 and it is between Maxxis Bighorns, Cooper ST( I believe they are about to bring out Cooper ST Maxx in this size also), or the Mickey Thompsons. Ive had Cooper STTs in a 285/70/17 and couldnt fault them, its a shame they dont make them in a 275/70/17.
I live near Stockton Beach and have done Moreton and Fraser Islands with the Cooper STTs, and didnt have a problem in the sand at all.
    Hope this helps.

Thanks mate still trying to weight it all up. After ringing around today it seems it's going to be a $2400 excersise to have a spare set of 17's at my disposal....I may have to look at something like a Cooper Zeon LTZ 285 60 18" and keep the factory wheels that will give me a slighty wider slightly taller tyre than the geolander AT's it has on. 776mm vs 800mm ???

We should go for a run Daz, so you can see how much of a hole the muds can dig...

I ran muddies at Robe to Beachport run. Never had a problem. Generally, muddies can go a few psi lower than an AT to perform similarly in sand.

I think if I stay with the going back to 17's route muddies are worth a look if their just for off roading may as well go aggressive..I think the "muddies are crap in sand" sayings are just a myth..

I am close to buying a set of Charcoal Speedy Chariots 17x7.5's and Mickey thompson STZ 275x70x17's which are 818mm OD Vs 776mmOD factory..apart from legalities I hope going that big doesn't have too much of an effect on the Multi terrain select and hopefully on a non lifted car they don't rub ??

I put on some Cooper Zeon LTZ's today 285x60x18's their what I was after a nice big chunky tyre with a larger diameter than stock. I decided taking 17's on and off was going to be a pain.

Don't the wider tyres rub on the front upper arm on stock rims?
