I'm really surprised a 17x9 with a +18 works at all. Doesn't that create 12mm less space on the inside? I wouldn't have thought there was room to move in that far.Black '09 150 D4D GXL. The rim is sort of no relevance on a 7.5 rim the tyre is pulled in more on the rim, on a 9 inch rim the sidewall is more squarer as the bead area is pushed out if that makes sense, at the end of the day the tyre size is still the same and that is the bit that would touch if their was an issue.Rob

In both cases the tyre is the widest bit not the rim, it works. The first rims I was sent were a +30 so 5mm closer and the tyre rubbed on the upper control arm, the +18 they sent second time round r good.Last edited by Hutch; 15-06-2013, 09:24 PM.Rob

Hi Karl,
You're confusing wheel backspace with tyre clearance. Backspace is simply the result of rim width and offset. Tyre clearance is also influenced by the tyre size. All this is hard to get your head around, I know. Many tyre fitters and distributors don't get it either.
You need to consider offset, wheel width AND tyre size all together for the full picture. Although the edge of the rim may be closer to the suspension components, the offset and tyre size mainly determines tyre clearance, providing that the rim itself isn't too wide that it fouls the suspension components.
Try this calculator for a better understanding: http://www.rimsntires.com/specs.jsp
Or have a look here for a more visual interpretation: http://www.willtheyfit.com/"Sure it’s quiet, for a diesel, but that’s like being well-behaved… for a murderer."- Jeremy Clarkson

The different offset reduces backspace by 7mm but the rim is 1.5" wider so backspace actually increases by 12mm. However as Hutch says this isn't relavent because the tyre sits evenly across the rim regardless of the width of the rim. The 275 tyre is 5mm wider on the inside (ish since tyres aren't always exactly the width they say) so combined with the offset the tyre is 2mm further away from the strut than a standard 265 on the factory rim. And compared to the 275s on mine on factory GXL wheels a much better fit because my tyres are 5mm closer to the strut. The outside of the tyre on Hutch's car is 12mm further out which is perfectly fine. All up a good result.
EDIT: it probably would be an issue for a VX or Kakadu based on the limited reading I have done but only because the location of the rim gets intimate with the KDSS naughty bits. That's why the guys running wide rims are going to 0mm offset or thereabouts. I think.Last edited by mjrandom; 15-06-2013, 10:00 PM.My 150 build - http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread.php?27423-A-Random-approach-to-a-Bluestorm-150-GXL-D4D-automatic

The bottom line is that in NSW the maximum legal track increase is +25mm and you cannot decrease track. The widest track available on a 150 series is the GX with an offset of +15. This means that you can legally fit a rim with an offset ranging from +2.5 to +25 on your GXL:
http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registrati...vsi09_rev4.pdf
The maximum legal tyre diameter increase in NSW is 15mm, which makes the 275/65/17 the maximum legal tyre size without engineering. A 265/70/17 tyre is just a little too tall to be strictly legal in NSW. However, putting legalities aside, fitting a 265/70/17 tyre to a rim with a legal width and offset will not cause any rubbing issues."Sure it’s quiet, for a diesel, but that’s like being well-behaved… for a murderer."- Jeremy Clarkson

Wow. I think my head just exploded. I just used the link Peter posted and I get it even though it doesn't make sense.

So Hutch's set up is legal. i.e 14mm increase in dia and 24mm increase in track. (Not 100% about calculation understanding on the track bit).
Gotta say a huge thanks to you guys for your patienceBlack '09 150 D4D GXL.
