  • Tire rotation.

Hi, i recently purchased 4 BFG'S for my 08 prado. I have done approx 10,000 klms on them and they have been great. Are they due to be rotated soon?. Do i simply rotate front to back or left to right? . I am not using the spare. Cheers.

Cross your steers over and bring the rears forward so next rotate the steers have flattened out and are going the opposite way to even out any scalloping

I do the 5 tyre rotation every 5000km. I inspect the tyre and rim for damage and wash it whilst it's off the vehicle. I also clean and inspect around the wheel arches i.e brakes, clips etc.

It can be a pain but as I said I get good wear and I also have picked up a couple if problems doing this thus preventing issues down the track i.e. screws stuck in tyres etc.

Bridgestone told me rotations recommended every 8,000Ks for my D697s. Haven't done that many Ks on the yet but am getting close. Don't have a 5th, the spare is still the factory Grandcrap, so will have to do a 4 wheel rotation. I know I really should replace the spare as well so they all match (tread pattern I mean, size is already the same) but wanted to wait till I was happy with these tyres first.

Purchased six MTs before the 120 had travelled 100K
130,000Ks later still going on the trade in.
              Rotated and balanced every 10,000K.
Never had a puncture. Great in the wet and snow.
Now to do the same on the 150.

But not only that, it keeps the tyres in the similar age bracket. There is a 4 digit number or similar on the sidewall unless your tyre is too old, I think around 2005 because the ones on my camper where of that age when I brought it this year, hence why I replaced them. The first two numbers are the week and the second two are the year.

It's a waste of $300 plus for a spare to sit on the back doing nothing except getting affected by UV rays (unless you have a cover of course). You would want to start looking at changing your tyres after 5 to 6 years anyway as tyres (rubber) naturally degrades (ages like the rest of us). This is where blowouts occur. Common symptoms are bulging of the tyre, fine cracks and the tread just peeling off in chunks to name a few. It could also effect your steering. I had tyres on the front of my sedan (which were less than 5 years old) which for some reason developed radial pull. The tyre itself went out of balance even thou it appeared fine. Changing them from side to side highlighted this and the only fix was new tyres.

I agree, the date of manufacture is rather important. Below is an example of what to look for. This tyre was manufactured in the 12th week of 2004. Most tyre companies warrant their tyres for up to five (5) years. Anything more and your vehicle can be classified as defective.

Technically speaking if you were involved in a motor vehicle accident and it was determined that your tyres were at fault and were past their use by date, you could be liable for everything and your insurance may choose not to cover you.

So a word of advice when buying tyres, check the manufacture date, even on brand new tyres. Anything up to about 6 months would be considered reasonable.

Thank you for the info.. Iwas always wondering what the first 2 numbers were.

                      Tyre rotation

I have rotated my tyres (all 5 ) every 10000 k's this has worked a dream on all of my last 4 vehicles. I get at least 60000 out of the tyres and have never had any issues with rims etc as they all get checked and tidied up at the same time.
Tyre brands are varied and on different vehicles from WRX to suzuki Baleno hatch and Prado, Patrol etc.

The reason I do the 5 tyres is that it does the spare no good just sitting in the sun as they deteorate (not wear) as much as the other tyres. All tyres have a limited life even doing nothing.
