  • Using Prado 120 GLX 17" rim as spare on 150 Prado GLX

    Hi there,
My camper trailer has 120 GLX Prado 17" alloy rims. Is it possible to use these rims in an emergency on a 150 Prado GLX?

    Thanks guys.

Legally, no, as the 120 rim will reduce the track by 5mm each side. It's not much though.

I may be wrong but would guess that a suspension lift changes the geometry enough to reduce the track by more than that.

Yes, you are wrong, track changes only with a change in offset.

In an emergency, I would stuff a tyre with spinifex if I had to and no doubt that is illegal so using a 120 series wheel that changes the offset by 5mm in an emergency situation until a repair was made is neither here nor there IMHO. However, I wouldn't recommend that you did it as a normal procedure.

You would have to be in a real bind to get as far as using the camper wheel. I trust you have a tyre repair kit, compressor and a spare on the vehicle.

I do, but you never know. Just planning for worst case scenario. Thanks everyone for the feedback.

Gordons I am in the same quandary. I have 4 17 x 7 Toyota steelies with BFG 275s. They are technically illegal to fit to the 150 and at the front will touch the UCA. Rear is fine. 265s would be ok. One of these days I will get around to doing something but I think the chances of needing a spare off the trailer are pretty slim though not impossible. I have set the trailer up like this since forever and once staked two tyres on the tow vehicle. So I parked up nice and cosy and stole the two trailer wheels so I could drive to civilisation and repair the two damaged tyres. Trailer was pushed up into he bush and was still there when we got back. It would have taken a dedicated theif to skull drag it out though.

I understand that is true with solid/live axles , but thought with the IFS the lift would push the wheels down and therefore closer due to the pivot point at the top control arm. At least that's what appears to happen when I make changes to my 1/8th scale radio controlled offroad buggy suspension.

Could be Mr Diesel, but in practical terms your insurance company or vehicle inspectors are going to look at the wheels fitted rather than trying to wrap a tape measure across the track of a mangled mess.

Gordons I have been running Toyota's 120 GX 17 x 7.5 steelies with 275/70 Bighorns for >30,000kms. They only touch front spring and rear inside wheel arch occasionally at extreme articklations; I have practically no lift. So you'll get away with them for emergencies no worries. Another trick is to pick up a couple of those little skinny 6" wheels that came on the plain package 120 - I call them space savers.

                    Cheers,
                    Gordon (only 1 of them).
