  • Tyre Size NSW Change in November 2013...7% larger diameter and VSI6!!!!!

Are you aware of this document?

    http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/registrati...s/vsi/vsi6.pdf

This covers Light Vehicle Modifications for more than just tyres.

From my understanding I can now fit 275 x 65 x 18 to my Kakadu Rims!!! This was released on other websites just after the changes in November.

Been that way in VIC for a while, hence 265/70-17 is now ok for 17 inch rims.

I called the RMS this morning and they confirmed that VSI6 is accurate and 7% increase in the rolling diameter is allowed without certification!!!

Isn't there some stipulation about vehicles equipped with ESC though? VSB14 (the Vic standard) stipulates that :-

To remain within the scope of this Section of VSB 14, a vehicle fitted with ESC must not be modified if the operation of the ESC is affected unless the ESC system is adjusted accordingly.
        It also states that :-

The overall diameter of any tyre fitted to a passenger car or passenger car derivative must not be more than 15mm larger or 26mm smaller than that of any tyre designated by the vehicle manufacturer for that model.

The overall diameter of any tyre fitted to:
        * 4WD passenger vehicles specifically designed for off-road use (typically MC ADR category). All wheel drive (AWD) vehicles including those AWD vehicles that may be certified as MC ADR category, (also commonly known as soft roaders) are not included in this category;
        * 4WD goods vehicles and their 2WD equivalents if the chassis and running gear are essentially the same as the 4WD version (N ADR category); or
        * any medium weight goods vehicle (NA2, NB ADR category).
Must not be more than 50mm larger or 26mm smaller than that of any tyre designated by the
        vehicle manufacturer for that vehicle.
I had 265/65/R18 BFG's on the Kaka when I bought it, these have an outer diameter of 802mm. The placard size for the Kakadu is 265/60/R18 which have an OD of 775mm so there's a 27mm difference. My vehicle falls within the MC ADR category as I understand it so the 50mm allowance should apply however Vic Roads were adamant that the 15mm limit was correct. My dealer contacted them as well and was told the same thing. My insurance company wouldn't cover me if the tyres didn't comply with Vic Roads standards. The end result was the dealer swapped out my BFGs for some Bridgestones in the factory size.

These VSB documents need to be read in conjunction with others and it all becomes very confusing. I realise Bawky is in NSW where different rules may apply.

          Hi Fido,

I read that VSB14 document, however NSW hasn't adopted that document, however I did read that one part of it was adopted for suspension prior to the release last November VSI6. I confirmed the 7% this morning with our RMS authority and I haven't read anything about ESC in the VSI6. He confirmed there were no other requirements just 7%.

The RMS confirmed that VSI6 supersedes previous released documents.

Fair enough. Like I said, different rules may apply in NSW. I only mentioned the Vic stuff in reply to D4D's post.

I really wish that the states would get their act together. What is legal in NSW isn't in Q so what does that mean for peripatetic PradoPointers on tour? Q are again reviewing the blanket provisions but whether that means changes to ESC equipped vehicles or not who knows.

AUstralia is small enought that there shold be one national system for vehicle rules and registration. Its only the politicians that want them seperate so they can charge money for something and keep their jobs. WHy does NSW pay more stamp duty than other states - why do custom number plates attract a yearly fee - its all criminal.

When I checked here in NSW with RTA I was only allowed a maximum of 15mm over original diameter ?? I just got the original size 265/65/17's A/T's couldn't be bothered with any hassles. Does restrict me though big time when looking for a good quality mud tyre for the second set of rims.....Cheers Steve

                    Hi Steve,

Did you check before or after Nov 2013? I was in the same predicament with 265 x 60 x 18, I can now go ST MAXX 275 x 65 x 18 a proper LT construction 123 load rating which was not available in the standard size.
