  • Tire time

    G'day guys,
Time to get new tires for my GXL described below so just wanting some feedback.

My off road driving is predominantly bush tracks with a fair degree of mud, ruts, rocks and the other usual stuff you may come across in the bush. I don't really do anything on sand and I'm not considering towing anything in the future. Noise isn't a major issue however of course I'll take a quieter tire over a noisy one if the performance is not compromised.

First and foremost though is on road safety and especially in the wet however I want a tire that is going to handle mud reasonably well. A legacy of driving tracks in Victoria I suppose

I've looked at the BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 and the Cooper S/T Maxx which will likely fit the bill in terms of handling the mud however how would these tires go for normal driving on the bitumen from a safety perspective.

    Thanks in advance.

Future mod wish list includes 2" lift, front & rear lockers, missile launcher and helopad.

    G'day free beer,
Sorry no-one's replied to you yet, but I suppose there's heaps of threads out there on tire choice. But to me you'r on exactly the right path of tyre choice for the style of driving you do. Its going to come down to a choice between the two you mentioned in the end as they IMO are the best quality choices. I've had both brands before and prefer coopers for on road manners and the new st maxx will be my next set of boots. As they have come up trumps in mag reviews for quietness, wet weather and off road ability.
    Happy hunting
    [B]Cheers Gary[B]

Thanks Gary, I appreciate the response.
Tire choice is the subject of great debate on pretty much every car forum on the planet I reckon. One guy will say brand x is crap, another will say best thing ever, one guy will say noisy as a chainsaw, another will say quiet... that's all for the exact same tire!!!
Just like you, I'm going to go the S/T maxx. Maybe we can compare notes sometime in the future.
      Thanks again.

I had Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs and was happy with the on/off road performance.........Very good allrounder tending to 70/30 off road IMO.

I rate Mickey Thompson tyres very highly. Just my opinion. If you go for a mud tyre and are serious about getting good milage out of them you have to be hard core religious about rotating them every 5000km and not necessarily wheel alignment often but need to read wear pattern of front tyres and have alignment adjusted accordingly. Don't bother messing with it if wear patten is good. I have a set of Mickey Thompson STZ'S with 80000km on them due to good tyre maintenance

Been a BFG user since our first 4wd in 1988. Had other brands on car when we bought them but changed when soon after.
Wouldn't mind trying the new BFG All terrain with the new side lugs. I use the AT KO for normal commute and have a set of BFG muddies for off-road.

The BFG A/T can last over 100000 km if treated right but like a lot of other tyres become a little slippy in the wet anything over 60000. Ride with the thicker side walls on the 118/121 load rated tyres is slightly harsher than the previous load rated tyres and I run slightly lower 35 psi to help this. Noise from the A/T is acceptable and the M/T are intrusive on smooth highway, but ok on second bitumen.

            Hope this helps.

The ATZ P3 looks good for a compromise 50/50 tyre. I've seen one on a 120 and the tread blocks are seriously chunky.

Ditto on that, I am hanging out for these to be released here, and in the correct size.

3 of my 8 tires are somewhere between completely worn out and maybe 15k left on them, keen to get a set of the new BFG's on the Prado and run the old tyres as spares and on the camper.

                Cheers Andrew

Bugger. I still have 50k on this set so will have to wait.
I did put brand new BFG A/T on the trailer before my cape York trip. The extra traction particularly on side slopes was so much better than the old tyres I used to run. The trailer now has (on these tyres) 30000 so will last for a while yet. They are showing signs of wear surprisingly and have lost a couple of bits to to sharpe rocks. Best thing is they can double up as spares for the car.
