Snorkels and noise

Hi all,

I am after some feedback from people who have snorkels on their turbo diesels. I am looking to get one fitted shortly and am worried about increased noise. My last 4x4 was a hilux and the noise from the snorkel was terrible. I know that this problem was endemic with hilux's but don't want the same problem again.

So, anyone out there who has a snorkel - is there any noticeable increase in noise and what brand of snorkel do you have?

My TD Prado had the snorkel fitted when I bought it, so I dont know if it makes a difference but I cant say I realy notice any noise.

I had a Safari snorkel fitted about 12 months after I bought my TD. The roof rack makes the most noise.

I suspect if you have a 3.4 L petrol you may notice it more as the snorkel is on the driver's side.

There are other brands out there that fit a lot closer to the A pillar than the Safari and may reduce any vibration or noise.

I allso have a safari snorkal, fitts very close to the piller and goes through the front gard just behind the side indicator not along the gard like the one on the drivers-side for the petrol prados.

Yep snorkels on diesel hilux's make a lot of noise due to the snorkel tubing rubbing on the folded section of metal that forms part of the bodywork. The only way to fix it is to use a FB hammer and smake the folded bit out of the way. The engine also produced a resonace in the air inlet tubes. Safari's answer was to put a restrictor in the intake and increase the air velocity and resonant frequency. This worked to an extent but the cure I think was worse than the problem.

As for the Prado I had one fitted to my TD and I reckon that the engine makes for noise that the snorkel. The Turbo does a good job of breaking up any resonance from the engine and there is no point of contact issue with the bodywork.

Hi Deep Thought,

When I had an SS106HF fitted to my turbo diesel surf, the fitter put the restrictor in (?) - step one in making life hard for the turbo! :x

Never had trouble with it rubbing against anything though, luckily...
