  • ARB Deluxe bar

hey guys, looking at getting a ARB deluxe bar for my 1998 prado. i was told at ARB Perth that the Deluxe bar fitted the 98 with airbags even though the manual says it doesnt. now my local ARB dealer in NZ says that the manual is correct and the only bar that fits is the sahara.
is this correct. does anyone have a deluxe on a 98 diesel with airbags?
is there much difference between the sahara and deluxe other than looks?

    cheers Ben

    Re: ARB Deluxe bar

Im in the same dilema at the moment. Would love the deluxe bar over the sahara bar bue to the fact that the deluxe bar has the headlight protection loops and the sahara bar doesnt. ARB dealer here in Sydney told me that the deluxe bar for the earlier models with airbag wont be acceptable due to there are no crash cans for the mounting system for the airbag but only the sahara bar does. Im confused as well...

Hopefully someone can shed light into this bullbar confusion.

      Simple to solve guys.

Get the Deluxe Combination bar or the Deluxe Winch bar for the 2000-2003 models, they are made for air bag equipt models as it was manditory to fit airbags to passenger vehicles from 2000.
      http://www.arb.com.au/products/

I have got a Sahara bar on mine because I liked the look better, and it fits perfectly fine on a 97 model, and they were only made for the 2000 on models, you only get a little gap between the bar and the grill. This is due to the later 90 series having horizontal slat design on the grill as aposed to the vertical slat design of the earlier 90 series.

        A couple things there don't add up Crozza;

        * There's plenty cars manufactured since 2000 which don't have airbags (such as mine).

        * The ARB Deluxe Winch bar is "available to suit non air bag equipped vehicle models." - whilst that could be read two ways, there's nothing specifically stating airbag compliance. I'd be chasing it up with ARB.

According to ADR, 2000 on passenger vehicles must have at least one air bag (drivers side), I think from 2002 they changed it to 2 airbags. Prado was not classed as a passenger vehicle until around 2002, up till then it was classed as a commercial vehicle, (for which you didn't have to fit airbags if you didn't want to) however aftermarket manufacturers had to antissipate this change and companies like ARB & TJM had to make air bag compatable bullbars before this date. If you look at the ARB site you will see that the 90 series Prado is broken up into 2 segments, 1996-2000 and 2000-2003, so if you need to get a bullbar for a 90 series made before 2000 (like mine) that has dual airbags, you need to get a bullbar from the 2000-2003 range.

ok, I seriously doubt that my 2000 8seater prado was ever classified as a commercial vehicle. Its the newer model with 60/40 rear seat, upgraded lights and interior. It has no airbags, deluxe arb winch bar with crash cans. The GXL had an optionally safety pack (airbags & ABS)

So you must have one of the last commercial Prado's. After 2002 they were reclassed as passenger vehicle.

Yes I know they are hardly a commercial vehicle, but that was one way a manufacturer could get around ADR.
2002 it all cought up with Toyota (and other manufacturers) where they could no longer call this type of vehicle a commercial vehicle, so it had to be a passenger class vehicle.

                  Thanks Croozza,

Yea hardly a comercial Vehicle, mine has the all beige interior, which looks pretty good actually makes it cooler inside aswell after a day sitting in the sun ,

once i go and get the rear drawers put in might have to request to see if they can do them in a beige aswel, would look pretty sweet....

Thats right Ghost, I have a 1997 VX Grande, so I have the Leather interior, sunroof, Auto box, ect. For a vehicle to be classed as a commercial vehicle now, it must carry more than 9 passengers, or be a ute, or carry more than 1 tonne payload. When Prado first came out it was hardly a commercial vehicle, but like all manufacturers, they will bend the rules as far as possable.
