  • 2ND start & PWR buttons not working

The 2nd gear start and PWR buttons on my automatic transmission are not working. No lights come on the dash. Vehicle always starts in first gear. And, PWR button doesn't seem to have any affect on shifting. (O/D switch works fine.) This has been the case since I bought the vehicle, a month ago.

I haven't been able to find any technical information on this. I have both the Haynes(US) and Max Ellery(Aus) manuals, but can't seem to find anything relevant. Wiring diagrams are confusing, as neither of them covers the D-4D engine. And, I just noticed that techinfo.toyota.com doesn't cover the LC90. Is there a UK or Aussie equivalent of this database?

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm going to try to diagnose it today.

    Silly problem...

It took me 2 hours to track down a wiring diagram for the model with the D-4D engine (KDJ95). But, I found it! Toyota Service Bulletin number BE−0025, dated Jul 2000.

Looking at the diagram, I figured the easiest way to diagnose the problem would be to pull the switch connector and measure the voltages. So, I pulled the switch out of it's socket. And guess what? There was nothing connected to it!

It seems the last person who worked on the centre console never bothered to re-connect the switch. Oh well. Re-connected the cable, and it's all working fine now. Took me about 5 minutes.

The 2nd gear start seems really useful for low range. It effectively allows you to select between 1st and 2nd gear, and prevent it from shifting otherwise. Or, put it into 'D,' and let it select between 2nd and 3rd gears (or 4th if O/D is enabled).

Was going to suggest you do that as it wouldn't surprise me if previous owners had them connected upto something else
