  • Front diff problems 1997 RV6 Prado

Travelling along black top, noticed slight whine in the front, another 59 km on definate whine in front, especially upon deceleration and around 60kmh. Sounds like front diff is binding up. Took of front propeller shaft and definite binding until I reach about 40kmh, even with no drive load on front diff (just the wheels turning teh drive shafts. Doesn't sound like anything broken - no crunching of teeth etc. Done 220,000km and no problems to date no heavy 4x4 recently. Have ARB locker in front.

Any thoughts? Carrier bearings? Anyone know what it would cost to recondition the diff, as I am going through the Simpson in August and need this to be bullet proof!!.

A whine in a diff is always the bearings as the cause of the problem, it is probably binding up cause a bearing has collapsed.

Talk to a diff specialist, they should be able to get the gear a lot quicker, they may have them in stock.

Yes talk to a diff shop.
If it is just the bearings, you should be able to rebuild what you have, provided that the gear sets are OK.

This will be a lot cheaper and quicker than replacing crown and pinion gears if it isn’t warranted.

I would also be looking at how your CV shafts and Front wheel bearings are, since they will be out as well.

I had my CV’s rebuilt to Premium quality for $220 bucks each.
