  • Diff Breather Caps

    Hi,

I'm wondering what the trick is to remove the diff breather caps, I'd like to install a breather extension hose from the rear diff to under the bonnet or into the body at the rear.

Do I need to unscrew the whole metal part or is there a way of removing just the cap without destroying it? I presume from there I can just fit my hose over the top (I presume it's a barb design of some kind).

If I need to remove the metal insert does anyone know what the replacement barb would be (with no cap obviously) - thread type and pitch would be great.

To remove the cap I've tried just pulling off by hand, I tried to unscrew it just in case but was sure the design wasnt a screw type, I've tried to it lever with a flat head screwdriver and I've tried gripping it with pliers. I must be missing something straight forward, any help would be appreciated.

Will do the front diff and the transfer case once I've worked out the rear diff....

    Thanks,

    Chris

Front diff already has a extended breather on it..... Those little caps are a bit tricky and they are just clipped on but the whole thing can be unscrewed to put in a barbed fitting..... FYI 79 series cruisers have both duffs extended and these parts are available still

The factory cap isn't a breather though so you are better off replacing them with something that allows air movement both ways. Some people buy dedicated breathers and some use fuel filters and some something else. I used some industrial gaearbox breathers for my 150. Used model aircraft engine air filters on the 120 and boring old fuel filters on the 90. All work fine.

Here's a very thread that covers diff breathers very well Chris. Grab a stubbie (or a Red) and start reading) http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...l=1#post140352

My understanding was the caps did have a bit of a breather system build in, just that it is ineffective when cold water hits the diff housing and causes the breather to suck air in. I have a breather extension kit with better breather caps to put on under the bonnet or body. Question I've got is how do I take those tricky little caps off? Given the other response it seems that yes I can or I could unscrew the barb (would like to avoid that if I can).

Do people just use pop them off by hand? Just that I spend a few minutes under the car on Sunday trying to get the rear one off and had no joy. I got a mate to try too and he could get it off either.

          Thanks,

          Chris

Not sure why you want to avoid unscrewing them, that the easiest way to go, a couple of bucks for a screw in barbed fitting and you on your way.

              Cheers Andrew

As Andrew says just unscrew the Toyota fitting, throw it in the bin, screw in a new fitting with a hose tail, run the hose (1/4" fuel hose or 1/8" if you are working on the transmission/transfer case) and fit something at the other end. There are other threads too in the 150 section showing what people fitted.

I was looking in the kit that I had bought and found that I have the fittings as part of it, I'll be unscrewing them this weekend and fitting them. Helps when you find the instructions that came with the kit. Mental note, dont separate the instructions from the parts and then do a big house clean up, they end up in totally different areas.

                  Thanks everyone for your help.
