Squeaking/Rattling Noise

Hi All,

I have a problem whereby when the car is idle or moving at a slow speed there is a squeaking/rattling nosie that seems present under the driver. However is disappears when the clutch is put in.

I know I have an inner CV joing that needs to be replaced (causes a clunking/clicking sound) but this nosie is new and I am worried it might be really bad.

Any ideas what it could be, initially I thought it might be a release/thrust bearing in the gearbox but I am not sure....

Hi Chris, My 2000TD makes a ticking sound when the clutch is released which can be heard at idle or when driving past a wall or fence that echos the noise back. From what i have read it is to do with the release/throw out bearing wearing a groove in the fingers of the pressure plate. When i lightly press on the clutch pedal the noise will go away. Nothing to worry about as the only way to fix it is replace the whole assembly. My vehicle has 118k on it. Hope this helps Ben

Thanks for that is it exactly describes the situation I have. My car has 190k on it and it only really started happening in the last thousand or so k's

I guess I will just have to learn to live with it.

same thing with mine, 190k on the clock as well,
only goes away when the clutch is pressed in

That noise my friends is the throw out bearing, it is full of dust and dirt from the clutch plates, no need to worry about it, it will last for ages like that, but if you can access it through the lever boot on the bell housing you can get a spray a little cleaner onto it, then spray a little bit of silicon spray onto it. This may or maynot stop the squeak as this method can be pot luck, but it is the only method you can try without removing the box.

Hi Fellas. Same as mine which has now done 210,000 km. As long as the clutch still works I can put up with it. Problem can be quickly rectified by winding up the window and turning up the radio.(can also be fixed by turning down the radio and winding up the wife) Cheers.

18600 km and mine has been like that for about 8 months
