  • Automatic Transmission - Shifting problem

    Hi there,
Just wondering if anyone has had similar trouble with this model before. Mine seems to be fine at times but suddenly starts giving problem. What it does "it just changes gears very fast all the way to top gear" and then fixes itself there. At this point it gives a feeling as if the speedo meter & rpm meter are stick together. No mattar if I am driving at 80kms or high the gears does not shifts even if I give it a full boot. However if I come to a dead stop and drives again it acts as normal and shifts the gears normally. But when I remain on a constant speed for a while it does the same again. It will also do the same thing if I am crawling in slow moving traffic.

This problem is there for more then 1 year. I have already replaced the transmission oil & filter couple of times as per the car specification, but the problem remains. Computer was also checked for the error codes but there were no errors found.

Already checked by couple of mechnics. One suggested to replace the transmission with a used one and another has suggested to do a transmission overhaul.

    Appreciate any help on diagnoses

Its 2000 VX Prado V6- 90 series. Patrol engine with Automatic Transmission - Done 240,000 Kms.

Re: Automatic Transmission - Shifting problem

Can you manually change the gears when it is behaving this way?

Switching the OD off should make it drop out of overdrive & back into 3rd.

Moving the t bar to 2nd should make it go into 2nd (or 1st if you are going slow enough). With the 2nd gear start button on with the t-bar in 2nd it should be locked in 2nd every when starting from a standstill.

I had the speed sensor fail on mine but that only upset the speedo reading & the cruise control. There is another sensor in the gearbox to measure the input speed (engine rpm) to assist in the gearbox making smooth gear changes. That may be the issue...

Hopefully someone will have had this issue...

    Cheers

Yes normally I manually change the gears when it is behaving this way.

OD is also some times usefull when I am driving bit fast.

The worst thing is there are no error codes in the computer that is why the cause is not clear. Anyway thanks for sharing your experience.

        Good News

Finally the problem has been fixed. Yesterday I went to give another try to a transmission expert. After more than half an hour test drive the guy said that transmission seems fine therefore he recommanded to do the computer check. He did the computer check and found error [code] 0210 for TPS (Throttle position sensor) malfunction. The "engine check" light was not active but the error was still present.

I think the auto electriction who did the computer check last time did not performed the computer check well that is why he couldn't find any errors.

After replacing the TPS I did the test-drive and found perfect gear shifting. Earlier there was strange smell with burning eyes sentation from the exhaust, which is also gone. All this fixed in less than $65 where as; I was advised by the Toyota agency and all other transmission experts that transmission has to be rebuilt to fix the shifting problem.

Very good news for you, pays to get a second opinion. Did you get the part from Toyota.
