    Re: Faulty transfer case?

    Williade,
Yep it'll be pretty strong now, so I'll have to be mindful of the next weak link; front CV's.
What do you mean about the 2 vs 4 spider gears in the front vs back diffs? Don't they both have 4?

    Bounder,
Yeah it has new seals in all 3 shafts and new bearings on each side (L/R). The oil stopped coming out now so either it's just old oil in the CV boot or my diff is half empty

The gears that drive the axles are the side gears and the ones attached to the diff carrier are the spider or pinion gears.

This lego diff has only one pinion gear.

This exploded view of an air locker shows 4 pinion gears.

Prado rear diffs have 4 pinion gears and the front (as your photos show) have only 2.

      Cheers,
      Declan.

          Re: Faulty transfer case?

I had a mission tonight to check the diff oil and CV condition and the results are:
          - Driver side CV boot came off with the slightest of effort, and some thick black oil came pooring out.
          - No grease present.
          - I cleaned/packed it full of grease and temporarily tightened it up with a pipe/hose clamp.
          - Passenger side boot is slightly loose, slight oil splatter present.

Conclusion: It's just old liquefied grease and a loose CV boot. All the CV's are probably due for new grease /seal. I didn't bother with the diff.

Lesson: Don't go back to that mechanic. How could they possibly miss this when changing the front diff???

Certainly have, but just a little test on a mound of dirt, hitting it with the driver side front wheel. Without locker I get crossed up and stop dead with 2 wheels spinning in the air, with locker it keeps trying to climb.
It'd be nice to try something decent like Mt Walker but I probably won't push it too much until I recon the CV's.
              I wonder if there's stronger CV's available...
