  • Power connection to UHF

    G'day Folks,

I recently bought a UHF radio and I am in the process of installing it. I've done everything less conecting it to a power source. I have read several install threads but none actually "scratch my itch"
I am seeking advice as re the best/easiest way to connect it to a power source.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

hi Snoopy welcome to the site... my own opinion is a dual core wire/ with inline fuse, straight to the battery.. some feel this is not needed, but i found in the past , works best for me..... that way i have the power to the c.b without the ignition key in or on... the marine radios i always do this way and have done this to my previous 4wd cb as well... but get a few ideas and set up for your liking..

    cheers butane

Most devices can be earthed locally, but in the case of UHF interferance should be considered. I ran both + and - leads straight to the battery. The UHF is one device I like to be able to use without the key - as it's useful when camping, and if you turn your car off in a convoy, communication won't be cut.

X 3 for direct connection to the battery.

In addition to the above reasons, another is in the event of an emergency (or lost keys) anyone can use your UHF without needing to find keys to power up.
The battery draw is minimal so if left on overnight it should not flatten your battery, I have my UHF direct to to my aux battery as well.

Direct connection to the aux or main battery is certainly the way to go. If your not fussed about requiring the key to be in the ignition then then tapping from the accessories socket is an easy option.

Thanks Guys for the advice, I think the direct connection to the battery will be the go. Now all I have to do is become the rubber man to get the wire through the hole in the firewall

Suggestion for going through the firewall, use the grommet on the passenger side and put some vaseline or lanolin on the cable and will slip straight through.

See ya on the tracks. Richo.

                Thanks Richo,

where is the grommet located, do I have to remove any panels to find it?
(sorry I'm in the office so I can't check my car)

I cant remember as my 90 series was gone 3 years ago but if it is the same as the 120 and 150 it where the harness goes though the firewall on the passenger side above the inner guard. Also if it is the same there are nipples on the grommet that you just cut the top off so you can slide the cable through.

                  Richo.

futher to the above, i use an appropiate length of tie wire, couple of wrapps around the dual core making sure the tail of the tie points in a nice lay down the dual core , bit of tape as well , just dont make a big bulge as it will be hard to pass thro the grommet..

that way the tie wire is stiff enuff to pass 300mm away from the spot in case those fingers are fat or tight area to get to . yes use some lube...

now get back too "work" ...lol... good luck , cheers butane

Thanks guys I'll give it a go.
As you can guess work is fairly quiet at the moment so I thought I'd do something productive :-)

An alternative to vaseline you can spray the wire with Silicon Lubricant which I find works very well.

I finished fitting the radio on Fri, works a treat.
I found a gromet on the drivers side which I ended up using as it provided the shortest route to my battery.
I mounted my GME unit on top of the steering column for easy access, ease of use and speaker clarity.

                            Thanks for the suggestions.

You can remove the glove box, this is done buy unscrewing the 2 phillips head screws on the under side of the hinges, then open it up as normal, the whole glove box will come out. Yoy then need to open the bonnet of the car, and use a 10mm spanner or socket to undo the wiring harness on the passenger side of the engine bay, just feed the wire through the boot, then through the firewall, the wires should then be seen from the inside where the glove box was, then just reverse the removal procedure and Bobs your aunty..lol
