This will be an interesting post to read other's comments.... I've seen this same question asked on various forums with various answers....

For me, I reckon for bitumen driving they would probably OK, but not something I would use in dusty conditions due to the many threads I've read + having a cousin in the automotive filtering business & listening to what he has heard/seen from other customers. The pros vs cons and potential damage that "could" result is not worth it IMO.

Iv'e seen particle testing using numerous types of cloth/foam element aftermarket filters and K&N came out on top for filtration. The only damage would be from lack of servicing, very much like any OEM filters

Now that I have read a few replies I should expand my first reply to say:

                  Long version:
You know what its like if you go out when its dry and your in a convoy, that much dust you need a new element a day!
I have had standard filters block in just a few dusty days, then ya blowing all this diesel smoke, no good......
Im not gonna stay home till it rains or spend $20-80 on a filter every 3 weeks.
so how to let it breathe? K&N....?

Many warned me of MAFM problems from using one (although they now use one also)
A few laughed when I told them I have a K&N in the box, hahahahahah........ pretty funny hey......
Ok so the warranty clearly says not covered for offroad......
The box also says pre oiled ready for use........for road use maybe.......
Use caution, I fitted and used it for a few dusty hours, took it into the workshop opened up and found small dust particles on the clean side of the box, NOT GOOD!
They also say you can re oil them, so i re-oiled it, heavily!
Refit and test, still some dust getting through..... found a small amount sneaking around the edges of the seal......not too sure how....
so i reworked the seal, (stretched it out a little) and put a smear of rubber grease, refitted and tested again.
Checked it after that a couple times and its 100% clean!

They say the dirtyier they get the better they work .... dunno bout that, but they used to say clean every 50,000miles, now i think they say 50,000klms, I trust mine now and will check it every 10,000klms and clean it sometime.........
The idea is even covered in dust they breath, and filter better....... set and forget....maybe not......:-?

short version: heavily oil it (wet and red) and check its sealed by checking clean side of filter inside box after some dusty use.
                  dirty air= worn out engine!

Hope that helps or at least wasnt too painfull reading

                    Good read....

I bought a ute that had one in it and upon telling my cousin who's in the filtering game, he said don't trust them. I pulled it out and now just using a the normal paper one. When I did pull it out I could see how if u didn't spray the outside everywhere and get down into every nook and cranny that u could possibly have a problem via letting dust through.... How much spray on stuff do u use ? the whole can?
Get it wrong and u pay a heavy price via potential engine wear....

It was far from the whole can, just a real good heavy spray, let it sit and re apply, like you said from all angles to get every nook and cranny, I think once the oiling is done correctly it doesnt go anywhere, to check its done right, after a dusty run check the clean side of the box is clean.....

I tend to favour using it my K&N around town, and on long road trips. But when of road in dusty conditions I tend to stick to the paper filter.

But I'm sure that the prado drives better with the K&N.
                        Regards, Heath.

TBH Iv'e yet to see a motor worn out through the injestion of micro particles of dust. A lot more other areas will fail before that.

Mate runs a K&N in his 80 series TD and reckons its good. He likes the extra power and you can really here the turbo spooling up through the snorkel with the window down. Personally, I have a Uni and I find it to be a bloody messy thing to service, but I never noticed dust particles on the clean side, even after following in a convoy on a dusty road for 100km. However, these filters get clogged quick and I can tell you the engine performance drops right off (try breathing through a chemical respirator). I would be using a K&N or Uni for general duties and rotate them inside the housing to expose a fresh part of the filter to the intake. I think paper filters are better suited to dusty driving.

An update, now as I said I'm using a k&n air filter.
I cleaned it just before Tassie trip late feb, (less than 2 months ago) it was pretty dirty as it had not been done for many months, may have even been close to a year
I also have a snorkel and the usual pre spinner that helps remove some stuff.

So I did my Tassie trip 10 days.
And maybe led 2 or 3 day trips since then, it's not even 2 months......
This is not relevant, but. Noticed my air-con belt slipping a little at times so I wanted o re-tension it before I headed north on Wednesday, so I'm out in the shed now done that, thought well I better give the k&n a quick clean or re-oil.

I think less than 5000klms this is what I found........

Now I don't really follow dusty vehicles, so it doesn't take much Klm's or offroad to block the sucker up,
Well the engine was still breathing ok, only because its a k&n, if this was paper I would have had symptoms.
Keep it well oiled, that's what you get, well unless you don't use it on unsealed roads.
