  • Oil Leak - Overflow ?

    Hi All
We have just had an oil change (about 3 weeks ago). Since then we have had a constant oil leak, having to top up about 5 litres of oil.

At first it looked like the sump was leaking from an old repair which I resealed, oil was just hanging to the sump from collecting on the bash plate, then on checking the seals around the sump there was a little moisture so I tightened all the bolts, and thoroughly degreased all areas.

This afternoon I found the leak was coming from the overflow pipe. The pipe is dry on the outside, and the oil was a little low.
Does anyone know what may be causing oil to leak out of the overflow?
    Martin

I am not sure what you mean by the overflow? Is that the small plastic tube near the sump plug? If so that is the oil filter drain pipe; in which case I would suspect the oil filter was not tightened correctly.

          Cheers Andrew

Well that points out your issue, if its low when the cars running that means that oil is leaking out the filter, oil only moves through filter when car is on.

tighten it up as much as you can by hand, we allways tighten filters by hand so we dont cross thread.

By overflow do you mean the hose that is next to the sump plug? If it is the oil is coming from the filter. Either the filter is loose and that happened a few times with my 90 or the filter is damaged. I used to tighten the filter a couple of days after a service because I found it loose more than once but not leaking like you are seeing though. Is the oil light taking longer to go out when first starting? A loose filter lets the oil drain out and it takes a while to refill.

No, I have it on my 120, and my previous 1kz 120, this is a 90 series thread so all the diesel Prados should have them. The idea is, when you crack the filter the oil drains through this tube avoiding a mess over the engine and bash plates.
It's only small so crack the filter, then undo the sump plug, by the time that is drained the filter should be empty and ready to fully remove.

                      Cheers Andrew

My 1kzte motor has the filter drain pipe as descibed by AJ.
Is it possible the plactic pipe is missing that lets the oil from the filter run down to the sump area?
If so the oil could be running down the passenger side of the engine block making it look like a gaset leak of some type.
I always give thay area a squirt with degreaser and a quick hose off after a filter change to stop those pesky drops of oil on the concrete in the days following an oil change.

If you post a few pics we may be able to get a better idea?
