  • larger turbo pipe??

Any body done any thing exciting to their 90 series TD engines??

Spied the following on a different list, anybody know of an alternative turbo exhaust pipe, and a cost (cause mine is probably in need of something like that)??

    Subject: Improving Turbo exhaust flow

Previously I've had a large bore exhaust fitted - from turbo dump pipe back. This improved performance, but not as much as I had anticipated. Removal of the turbo identified the issue - the small bore in the cast turbo dump pipe.

I did find a cast unit to fit, but shied away when ws told the price was over $400. Here's a pic of the original & aftermarket unit http://203.100.242.254/pub/dump_housing.gif The unit on the right is the factory unit (the match box wont go in any further). The aftermarket unit is on the left. This clearly was not the type of $$ I was prepared to spend, since the rest of the exhaust system was just a bit more than that.

The factory cast dump housing is about an internal diameter of about an INCH, negating much of the benifet available from the 3" system I had installed. After much pro-crastination I have manufactured the flange required build a custom turbo dump pipe to improve the exhaust flow from the turbo. The pipe work was fairly stright forward.

Fitting the new dump pipe resulted in the turbo spinning up a lot quicker, bringing boost on quicker, improving drivability while lowering the EGT some (more) for increased relaibility.

I have done the same on a friends Patrol, after he was less than impresed with the improvement provided by the exhaust system alone, and had similar results.

This was a mod that had no negitive impacts what so ever. Anybody interested in an exhaust flange for Hilux / Prado / Surf or Patrol should

    Turbo Diesel Exhaust

Been doing a little bit of research into this area myself.

First of all I'd be interested to find where you got that little extract. When you view the picture of the dump housing it is interesting to see that the old one is actually a smaller picture, rather than a smaller unit. Why isn't there a match box in the aftermarket one for comparison? Bit of a trick with smoke a mirrors I feel.

I checked out the website for Eng-tek. Seems there is no phone number...Ummm how do you get to speak to someone if there is a problem.

But down to business. I'm not sure where you live, but there are a couple of exhaust fitters here in SQLD that specialise in turbo diesels. One fits a mandrel bend with a larger dump pipe at $900 fitted. The other, which is more expensive around $1200, has power up stages involving a specially fitted Cut to measure exhaust with a larger dump pipe, performance muffler as stage one.

Stage two involves an engine management module, K&N Filter, right upto lpg over diesel.

If you live in South QLD I can give you the details.

I think you are right about the two photo's being pasted together to form one, but the distance between the studs has to be the same if its going to fit the same engine. Perhaps the person taking the photo just forgot to put the matchbox in the new exhaust casting, I dunno?

Found a contact page at http://www.eng-tek.com.au/contact_us.php

While its is hard to see due to the carbon black, the passage actually narrows inside to restrict the matchbox from going in any further. I've actually had the cast housing off of mine & seen the amount of restriction.

$900 is too much for a replacement dump pipe, gee I can have the rest of the system for bunch less than that if I want to fit it for myself (or did you mean the system & dump pipe - thats OK). I'd think it was about 3 hrs work to make up the dump pipe, plus materials, and the exhaust flange. Actually I found the exhaust flange (only) on that site, and its $44. Its here, http://www.eng-tek.com.au/product_info. ... ucts_id=63 Looks like the right shape.

Is there any other dump pipes available for 1KZ-TE than this Eng-Teks one? I´d want to 3" dump pipe, but this Eng-Tek reduces to 2.75" just as the dump pipe ends.

Is the original 1KZ-TE dump pipe flange like this?

        DaveO´s link http://203.100.242.254/pub/dump_housing.gif don´t work.

          www.beauexhausts.com.au. Try these guys.

The make a 2 3/4 inch mandrel free flow bolt on system with a 3 inch dump pipe.

If you only fit a larger dump pipe without the better exhaust system your wasting our time.

My power went to 118 Kw at the flywheel and torque is just under 400Nm.

          Get between 9.5 - 10L/100 km.

Yep. I found this too and get this answer:
We can supply you with a 3” dump pipe for your Prado 1KZ-TE for AUD $300.00. If you wanted the dump pipe HPC coated

That would be an extra AUD $65.00. HPC coating is high performance coating for heat reduction and extended life.
WIZARD, do you have the intercooler in your Prado? I know you have Dtronic, K&N, hiclone and 2.75" exhaust.

And yes, I am making 3" exhaust after the dump pipe. Don´t worry.

Of course I have an intercooler (air to air). All Prado TD built for Australia have them. It's only the overseas models that may not have them. The only vehicles fitted with the 1KZ-TE that don't have them are grey import Surfs and the locally available Hilux.

I no longer have Hiclones. I had a dynotune done the car after the exhuast replacement as the exhaust caused it to run too lean. The mechanic had some dealings with Hiclones and suggested they be removed. He had some very convincing reasons to take them out.

Original power is 107 kW, right? Is that 118 kW gained with bigger exhaust only?

Do you have pictures of the dump pipe?

Original power, according to Toyota is 96 kw. The power/torque gains are a combination of the Dtronic and the exhaust.

I got the picture of ENG-TEK´s 2,75" dump pipe:

Because I already have 3" exhaust parts purchased, I ordered 3" dump pipe from www.beauexhausts.com.au

Yes. 8) I got it installed and new 3" exhaust is done too. Feels better, better torque I think. And more noise, but it´s lower sound = nice.

I´m very happy that I have the bodylift. I can imagine how painful tight those place (dump flange and rear crossmember) would be without the lift.

                        Pics of them:

3" exhaust, designed/done by myself (before sink painting):

Beaudesert 3" HPC coated dump pipe vs. original:

Very high quality. I like the weldings.

There is never been a cat between the pipe in these models. The flexible part is different, the original was just flanges with two bolts and springs.

                            Shipping was AUD$76.

                              Re: larger turbo pipe??

OK fellows I too have noted the improvements of the upgrade on the exhaust system. However, I had my 95 series larger dump pipe replaced this week due to the dump pipe cracking nearly all the way round. I'm waiting to see if the manufacturer comes to the party.

I had the exhaust shop fit another flex joint just below the new dump pipe I'm hoping that this will fix the problem in the future. However it may me a strength issue, the thinner wall on the fabricated pipe being too weak to endure the constant vibrations and heat. It is a 2 and a bit year old system now, I would have thought that it was a one time only modification. The dump pipe also only carries a 12mth warranty, or so I am led to believe. But guess what there was a 120 series Prado on the hoist when I arrived with the exact same problem and the pipe was from the same manufacturer. So its not a one off occurrence.

Also this dump pipe looks a lot like the Eng-Tek one. Exactly alike in fact. I am wondering if they are indeed the same item.

                              Anyhow foretold is fore warned.
