I have a tappet like noise in my engine and no one seems to be able to find out what it is. Two lots of mechanics have thought it was my belts, one tightened and the other changed them and both times the noise is still there. I have suggested to the mechanic to check the tapptets to see if they need tightening or if I have one that is stuck, but they don't think I should waste my money. Does any one have any idea what this problem might be?

How old is your engine?
Does is sound same speed as engine?
Does it sound slower as in 1-4 ratio?
Does it disappear when decelerating at speed?
It it localised to any one pot or more?
Is it louder on a cold start up then quietens after a moment or two?
If it is localised it may be needing shims replaced for clearances etc....
If its not that check gloe plugs then injectors
If its not that then check fuel injector pump return springs may be fractured causing injector line hammer.
If its not that open up the head....look for valve damage etc...
These are just a few of many causes.....not in any order of course....
Good luck....

Thanks for your replies. My prado is a 2000 model (13 years old). I cannot hear the noise when the engine is idling but when I start to drive it I can hear it quite clearly but as the engine warms up it seems to be harder to hear. The speed of the noise increases when I increase the speed of the vehicle.
Many thanks
Helena

So the noise is not present when you rev the engine whilst the vehicle is stationary? If not one would think it's the drive train i.e. gearbox, transfer case, prop shafts, axles and wheels.
When driving place the vehicle in neutral, engine idling and the vehicle still rolling at say 40km and see if you can still hear it. Whilst in neutral rev the engine to see if the noise changes. Does it make the noise in low range?
You could also at home drop the front and rear tail shaft to see if it's something to do with the gearbox / transfer case.
Mounting a gopro with an external mic might be able to pickup where the noise is coming from.

Hey bundy girl.
Seeing how you have posted in the diesel thread it would be fair to assume you have the 1kzte motor.
Does you noise seem more obvious after sitting overnight and then the noise reduces after the motor runs for a while?
When the noise happens, open the bonnet and have a listen, then stick your head under the front of the car near the radiator and listen.
If the noise seems louder underneath, I have a simple check you can do.
Seeings how 2 mechanics said 'BELTS', I will be leaning towards a check of your 'harmonic balance' - or AKA 'Crank Pulley'
Im interested to hear what you hear... If that makes sense...HERS - KZJ120, BILSTIEN / KINGS, AMTS GEAR, RHINO GEAR, OUTBACK DRAWERS ETC ETC ETC

Finally found out what was wrong with my Prado. After being told by the Toyota mechanics that the tappets on the model Prado I have normally tighten, this wasn't the case with my vehicle, the clearances in the tappets was twice as much as they should have been. So finally I have a motor vehicle that runs the way that it should.
Thank you to all of you who replied to my question.

Need help too!
Hi all this is my first post and I need help!
Good to hear they located the problem Bundy Girl but I am experiencing the same issue and am struggling to find a mechanic that can pinpoint the issue aswell. I have looked everywhere and this thread looks like the closest issue compared to mine.
I have a 06’ 120 1KZTE with 156k kms and I have had all belts replaced, idler bearing replaced, valve adjustment, replace glow plugs and had injectors reconditioned. I have run out of options other reconditioning the injector pump.
The knocking sound is intermittent and can only be heard when car is started from cold start and disappears after the car warms up. Its driving me crazy and I have a trip planned up to Morten Bay Island in January and don’t want to be left stranded.
Any feedback is very welcome
