  • Intermittent check engine warning light

Wondering if anyone has experienced this before:

I have a 2002 Turbo Diesel Toyota Prado.

Recently I have noticed that on occasion my engine light has been coming on while going downhill. When the mechanic hooked up the little machine it said it was something along the lines of a 'Timing system control fault'. I've recently had the engine head replaced as it was cracked, and since this, the main tank fuel gauge is reading about 1/4 tank higher then actual level. I've just returned from a driving trip to Canberra over the weekend and noticed that the engine light came on a few times while going down into a valley (doing 100/110kmh) and failed to go out straight away, and I had no acceleration at all until the car slowed to about 40km/h and the light went off and I could accelerate again. Seems to go out when the RPM is below 1000. When the car is cold and I turn it on without starting the engine, the main fuel gauge reads correctly most of the time, and then slowly creeps up after the engine has started. I don't know if it's all linked or not, and I've asked 3 diff mechanics to look at it, without any success. (P.s sub tank gauge reads correctly all the time)
    Cheers,

    Tina.

not had that problem before ,however i am nearly finished a 1KZ diesel auto conversion to my V6 90 series so i know the wiring inside and out ! almost down to the colour codes !!
you said the head was replaced ... did the motor come out or just the head off with the block still in place? id be looking at wiring possibly a stretched wire or a plug that has a wire separated from the connector or a couple of wires or one wire that has been crimped to something

Was the code a 14? You can retrieve it yourself with a jumper wire in the diag box near the top rad hose. There are instructions on here somewhere if you don't have a manual.

I'm just throwing up the fuel starvation idea for consideration.

First off, was the check engine light coming up before the head was repaired?

Yeah the engine light was coming on before the head was replaced. I was hoping that fixing the head would resolve the problem, but obviously not.

I Had the code read today and it is 'p1220 - timer control circuit'
          Cheers,
