  • Calling PP Brains Trust - Camshaft Gear Removal

I'm trying to get the camshaft gear off, so that I can remove the backing plate, so that I can pull the head off... I've googled this extensively and can't find a solution. Most people struggle to get the gear/pulley bolt off, but mine came off really easily. The problem I'm having is getting the actual gear pulley off. From what I've read it is on a taper shaft and a few taps with a hammer should have it jump off. I've given it little taps, big taps, with a little hammer, with a rubber mallet, with a bf copper hammer... I've heated it till it started smoking (the seal is probably f'd now). No luck though. I've gone out and bought 2 different types of gear pullers but none fit on the pulley because one one side there is no way to get the "toe" in behind the pulley. How do I get this bastard off???

I used one of my pullers, had to grind one or two legs thin to get behind the pulley.
Tightened it up as much as I dared (pulley is bloody flimsy) and went away for a coffee.
    Came back and she's off.

OK, out with the grinder then. And if it doesn't work, and the grinder is still within reach...

Did you use a 2 or 3 leg puller? And just how much pressure did you put the through the puller? I'm using a 75mm 2 leg puller with ratchet spanner, and it's starting to get tight now. I can turn it more, but I have no idea how much force that pulley can take.

I would have tried for a three leg but I can't remember if that was possible.
Just a thought, the pulley is still tight on the cam, hasn't sheared the key and rotated a touch?

After not much success I went onto ebay to see what a new pulley costs, ready to destroy this one. $50! I decided I would happily pay $50 to have the pulley off, so I just cranked on the puller. The puller starter bending down so I braced it with a bottle jack against the water pump, and just kept cranking. It took about another 2 full turns before it popped off. SUCCESS!!!!
