  • servicing injectors and pump

Starting to blow some smoke, slight power loss and use a bit more fuel than before esp when towing under load in my 2001 TD Prado manual, as the injectors and fuel pump have not been serviced at all over the 220,000 km starting to think that they might need servicing, tried the injector cleaning additive, it improves it but only if i put 150-200 ml in each tank, then once it is used up it goes back
Heard some good reports about West End Diesel at Wetherill Park, does any body have any good/bad experiences with them, or alternatively can reccomend someone closer to home (Castle Hill)

    Regards

Ran into a mate of my brothers over the W/E who is a diesel mech, he diagnosed the prob as some loose tappet/s and needing new injectors. Got a price on the injectors from Don Kyatt @ $98.50 each, and will fit them myself. Looking through the manual to adjust the tappets it looks like a difficult job, has any body done it at home and how long will it take? (my bro's mate is back in QLD now

    Regards

Not a difficult job if you have a bit of mechy knowledge. It is heaps easier if you have the correct tool to compress the valve spring to get the shim out also. (I've heard of it being done with 2 screwdrivers)
If you need to change shims plan for about 3-5 hours which includes a run to toyota to get new shims
each shim last I checked was ~$15 each from toyota

Thanks for the feedback, Will prob end up getting a mechanic to do it as I dont have a micrometer or the tool to compress the valve spring and cant see the sense in buying one.

          micrometer cost ~$40
Special tool cost ~$90 (I got mine in about 2000 at a cost of $40 so I'm just guessing at todays costs)

if you are confident in doing it yourself there is a potential saving to be had when comparing to a toyo dealer doing the job for you.

          jsut a thought

Thanks, last time I priced a tool from toyo it was just too expensive (assumption is a bummer)

Normal 21 mm socket for spark plugs is just fine.

Does that mean you cannot use a spark plug deep socket for removing injectors??????????

Of course it is! But you can use a spark plug socket for injectors.

Finally doing the job myself, DonKyatt have brand new (not reco) injectors for $138 ea
Will be picking them up tomorrow,
looking at the manual, I have to take the intercooler and pipework from the air cleaner to the turbo off, are there any gaskets that I will need?, again looking at the diag in the manual, it shows a gasket but is it reuseable?

                            Thanx in advance

                              Re: servicing injectors and pump

no need to break any gaskets when you take the intercooler off or the pipe work between air cleaner and turbo inlet
Intercooler is spring loaded clamp type of hose clamp at turbo outlet and manifold inlet
Air cleaner pipe work is screw (10mm or philips) type hose clamp at turbo intel
