  • Turbo charging 3L (2779cc/2.8 litre) diesel

    Hi!
I am quite new here..getting lot of ideas about SUVs.I bought a used 90 series Prado 2.7l engine 1998 make. The engine is sluggish so I want to know whether its possible to fit a turbo, intercooler for more power and performance, the engine has clocked 160k kilometers. Any other suggestion will be appreciated.
    Neywin.

Re: Prado 90 series non turbo 2.7L engine

    What engine do you have?

    2.7lt is a petrol - 3RZ-FE

    Diesels are;

    3.0lt - 1kz-t, 1kz-te, 5L or 1KD-fte
    2.8lt - 3L

only other engine is the 3.4lt - 5VZ-FE

Re: Prado 90 series non turbo 2.7L engine

I have seen on 4WD australia website a thread where a member put a Supercharger onto a 2.7l petrol motor. From memory putting the supercharger was fairly easy. However getting the fuel mapping right for all loads was a saga (additional injector and injection chip).

It is a 4Wd afer all and nearly everything change/upgrade results in B.O.A.T. (Bring out another thousand).

Re: Prado 90 series non turbo 2.7L engine

        Hi!!
It's a 3l diesel non turbo engine. I find it hard to knock the engine beyond 100kmph. So pls let me know whether fitting turbo, intercool would help increase the power (suggestion for the make/model of turbo, intercooler?) or is there any other option you may suggest.
        Thanks

          The 3L is 2.8 (2779cc)

          There are a number of companies doing off the shelf turbo kits for this engine. Here's one (very good one) as and example;

          AXT turbo kit

A google search will find you a few more. Expect 50-60% power increase with a turbo kit over standard.

Personally I'd lose the 3L (it's a bit of a dog) and fit a 1kz-t (or 1kz-te would be even better). This would give you the same power as a turboed 3L but has the potential to be tuned for a further 30-50% output.

Because the 1kz comes from the factory turbo charged is comes beefed up with better internals such as pistons, rods, crank, oil pump, cooling system etc etc so it will be far more reliable/durable than a 3l with aftermarket turbo kit.

Re: Prado 90 series non turbo 2.7L engine

firstly, Neywin, it might help if you include the location where you live in your details so that we know that we are all running off the same sheet of music.

Not much point asking a question about a 2.7 petrol engine in the diesel section.

If you were unfortunate enough to part with your hard earned for a 2.7 petrol and finf it underpowered well you have an expensive exersise ahead of you. Perhaps a little resaerch prior to the purchase may have helped.

in addition the 90 series Prado does not come in a Non-Turbo diesel form in Australia. The engines available in Australia are either:

            2.7 (2693cc) litre 4 cylinder petrol - 3RZ-FE
            3.4 (3378cc) V6 5VZ-FE petrol
            3.0 (2982cc) 4 cyclinder 1KZTE turbo diesel.

I don't think you have much of an idea about your vehicle, if you think you have a 2.8 litre diesel Prado then I would suggest that the vehicle is a grey import with an engine not available with Australian models.

So which is it? A 2.7 Litre petrol or diesel?

            Finally. Mick.

before quoting facts and figures it might avoid embarrasement if you check them first. The 1KZTE 3.0L engine is 2982 cc, so I am not sure where you could deduce that it is a 2.7 litre. What is the 2.8 litre is that the 2895cc rounded down? The only Toyota fitted with a 2.8 diesel is the Hilux or those which were overseas models of the 90 series Prado (AKA Grey Imports). A quick check on Google would confirm this.

If we are going ask for or provide advise let's get the facts correct.

Save myself some embarrassment :?: :?: :?: MY FIGURE OF 2779 IS FOR THE 3L ENGINE :!: :!: :!: I quoted 2982cc for the 1kz in my earlier post.

Maybe it's YOU who should take some advice and read slowly and carefully before replying.... thinking would help too before jumping on your soap box.

An apology would be nice.... or maybe a holiday to cool your heals.

And YES in case you haven't worked it out.... I am quite put out by the wording of your reply :!:

If you want to try and be a smart arse you should at least be right before shooting your mouth off.

              Mick.

PS... I don't need Google.... I know my shit... unlike some.

                HI WIZARD
sorry the question is not Australia specific and am sure about the specs i mention is correct. I am in India it's a Japanese manufactured LC 90 Pre Owned by a United Nations official here in India. I just want to know whether i can upgrade the engine with a turbo or not or fix a new engine entirely , with respect to the vehicle's gear transmission..and if yes what kind of engine i should look out for.
                Thanks
