diesel tank size on SWB 96 RX

Hi Guys.

Anyone here confirm the tank size on a swb is 90 litres? I have had the fuel light come on at just above E (as you would expect) but it only takes 72 litres to fill from there. Tank has no dents so I was wondering whether the Toyota geniuses just adjust the gauge to give another 100km of driving from when the light comes on or if my gauge float isnt set right. My light comes on at approx 600kms of average driving (town and country) and I figure I have almost 20litres left at that point (another 100-150kms of range). How many Kms are you guys getting from a 90lt tank?

Same with the 120 LWB wagon, Toyota are very generous with their reserve. If I fuel up when the light comes on I get 160-165lt in (180lt total rated capacity)

Lowest I've ever run is a 173lt fill.

I confirm, itīs 90 litres. And the light goes on when there is about 15 litres left. But I think you canīt drive it dry. I have tried, the car stopped but only about 85 litres went in. So it means that I can drive about 800 km/tank.

Yes the main tank holds 90 litres, but you will never use all that unless you run the tank dry. It is common knowledge that most, if not all, car manufacturers that have a fuel warning light have built in a numpty fudge factor in case they drive until the light comes on they know they have 20 litres or so to get to fuel.

I hope you don't think the light is expected to come on at 90 litres as that could be a little late and you might be doing a long walk with a jerry can. These are the things you discover about your vehicle and then apply to your fuel plan.

"Ok the low fuel light has come on...no need to panic as I have 20 litres left which will get me around 80 km or so.

I have an aftermarket main tank holding 170 litres, on average I am putting in around 135 litres once the warning light has come on.

:lol: :lol: :lol: Nah, I'm not stupid enough to want it to indicate its empty as the last drop of fuel is sucked out of the tank. I just wanted to confirm the "generous" warning light. Cool now I know I can get another 100 out of the tank when it comes on I can relax a little. :wink:

Being an import wagon to NZ I just wanted to check I didnt have some weird setup, but I am happy knowing its a 90l tank. :mrgreen:

one thing you need to remember though, if you run the fuel low, the fuel will heat up from the returned fuel from pump to tank, this will mix with the remaining fuel in the tank, and as there is not much fuel left, it will not cool down enough and when it gets back to the pump again.........same process over and over again. This will damage your fuel pump over time.
The best thing to do is fill up before the light comes on, the same thing will happen to petrol versions as well but not as bad. You also suck in the crap from the bottom of the tank and clog up filters and this can then bypass the filter (all fuel and oil filters have a bypass if they get too dirty) and then it gets into the pump.

This will damage your fuel pump over time.

Not will happen with the distributor pump, the pressure is not so high. Common rail engines have 10 times more pressure and they have coolers in the returning line to tank.
