  • Engine malfunction light, stalling and black smoke FUN

    G'day guys
About 3 weeks ago the engine malfunction light popped on and the car went into limp home mode, had a look but could not see anything obvious so the car went to the mechanic. He seemed to think a stuck wastegate actuator was the issue. However that all seemed to be fine so the throttle body got a once over and a good clean. For about 2 weeks the car was fine. Now the car is stalling intermittently at low speed i.e. in traffic or pulling into a parking spot (with clutch fully in) and revs rise and drop causing the car to shudder. Occasionally when this has happened black smoke has poured out the ass end for a very short time. The car always started up fine again first pop however occasionally it would run really lumpy. Took the car back to the mechanic today and he can't diagnose a fault however when he took it for a drive the car went into limp home mode with the engine check light on again. The diagnostic was hooked up to read an error code of i think p122 which is not in the books???? The local diesel bloke seems to think injectors and pumps but is not sure and I'm not willing to take the gamble when it's big cash. However I'll be talking to allied fuel injection tomorrow.

So after the mammoth essay do any of you prado guru's know what might be causing the problems????

Also i do have a boost gauge fitted and it didnt read over 1 bar before going into limp home, it generally sits at 0.7 max

Sounds like over fueling, because of the smoke out the exhaust when it stalls, this could be caused by dirty injectors or pump malfunction.

After a close look over the throttle body an uninsulated wire was found, possibly grounding and causing problems??? Since then the prado seems to be going strong but time will tell. I've also picked up some injector cleaner just in case

How annoying, a damned wire! Always the way but I guess it saved a lot of $$$$$.
