  • LPG/ Petrol

Hi, I am new to Pradopoint, and although i dont own a prado, my hilux does run the 3400 v6 motor. I am looking at the best way to improve fuel economy on running both LPG and Petrol. The engine doesnt like to idle as much and seems hesitant on take off when i run on LPG, compared to the petrol. Any advice will be much appreciated. Thankyou.

Not quite true , but they are putting a tax on it ,,, That makes it about 55 cents a litre next year in Perth, wont break the bank I think .

MARK COLVIN: A tax on liquefied petroleum gas is causing embarrassment for the Federal Government and bewilderment in the industry.

Details of the tax were buried so deep in the budget that the Federal Treasurer, Wayne Swan, couldn't answer questions about it in Parliament, the day after he handed down the Government's financial blueprint.

The tax on LPG will begin at 2.5 cents a litre at the start of July next year, and rise to 12.5 cents by 2015. The Opposition says it's a secret tax slug which families, small businesses and taxi operators can ill-afford.

But the Government insists it's just put the final touches on a scheme enacted by the previous government.

I think your car may need a tune up at a gas place, they usually run better on gas than petrol.

Am I missing something or has LPG suddenly become a NON CARBON NEUTRAL fuel. I thought the Gov't wanted to reduce our carbon footprint! This seems to be a reversal of the whole carbon tax policy. Lets all pay increased taxes, YAY.

Yeah there full of shit Ken, screwing us for every cent and these pricks keep getting bigger and bigger salaries, carbon tax is just another way of screwing us, this government needs booting up the arse and pissing off, like evry one else Im sick of getting a piss arse pay rise and then pay more then my payrise to compensate, eg water, everyone does the right thing and reduced water usage during the water restrictions due to drought, not making the money they were so put the cost up, same as electricity and so on. I want to know why we cant access our super till where 60+ (depending on when you were born) and these asshol#s can get it straight away at any age wether 40 or 70 ?? Like Kelly here in Penrith retired at 40 become a mum, was getting 103k (im talking a few years ago now) then this will go up but can also access her super whenever she wants, and she did what ?? 5 years or so in a government job.pfff all full of shit..............

Better ecomony for both petrol and LPG may be gained from new leads and plugs, tyre inflation, driving style, inlet air leaks, exhaust, etc. After reading the muffler flap post, I re-seated my muffler flap spring, and sure enough, didn't have to press the accelerator as hard when taking off. It certainly helps low down performance, and I expect ecomomy too.

If you are concerned with your LPG usage, try screwing the large screw on the low pressure inlet hose half a turn. I had mine professionally tuned with an exhaust analyser, then restricted this gas restrictor 1/2 turn, and did not notice any performance drop.

Between these two changes, my 195 000km manual 90 series just consumed 18L/100 km LPG (50L for 275km) - mostly towing a 7x4 trailer with cage; 125km towing at least 1m3 dirt and gravel at gross weight appox 1t, mostly highway. It cruised at 100 easily, even with the full trailer. I look forward to my next unteathered run to note the LPG economy.

PS - Your gas delay symptom indicates the sensitivity and / or idle mixture screws at the LPG converter need adjustment. You can google ways to set these yourself (perhaps unscrewing until the performance improves, then screwing in 1/4 turn), but definitely better to take it to a LPG mechanic with an exhaust analyser.

PS - We're into the 2.5 less excise, and it still rarely costs me more than $30 to fill, thanks to Coles' 8c off per litre (eg 65.9c - 8c = 57.9, $28.95 for 50 litres). LPG will still be the way to go, even after the full excise is applied (11c?). It emits far less CO2 than ULP, and particularly than diesel. Granted one uses less diesel, but LPG would still less harmful to the environment.

Thanks marknatasha89. I'm giving this a go too. I'll be keen to see if there's any improvement. It seems to have the same if not a tad more power after turning it in half a turn and no side effects.
Have you seen any economy improvement yet?
                      Cheers Ben.

Well after turning in the power valve screw half a turn I got an extra 50 km from the tank of gas and it's not quite empty. Power seems the same if not slightly better and the motor is running nicely. I may see even more kays from the next tank cos I gave it a bit of stick during this tank to make sure it still ran well
I'll still be getting a dyno tune when I get time to try and get the most from the exhaust mods.
                        Cheers, Ben.

Extra 50 KMs per tank and extra kick sound awesome but be careful running the engine lean produces more heat as well !! that can burn valves and cause more grief in the long run. For the price of LPG I won't take the risk.... just my opinion.

                            Hey Hilux,.
Did you ever resolve the problem? What system is it and is it Injected LPG or std mixer setup.
I have an injected Autronic system and have never had it running to my satisfaction. The mob that installed it have been deregisterred by the AAFRB and to get it to meet Aust standards need to spend about $600. Has always used significantly more LPG (about 30%) around town and offroad sucks lpg like you wouldn't believe - as little as 200k from 64litres or 32l/100. Also like yours found it to be hesitant on take off - regularly needs tunes (every 6months) which fixes the problem but always thirsty.
With the high price of LPG (particularly outside metro areas) thinking of using the $600 and refitting the old tank which gives me far greater touring range

                            cheers

                            Andy

Hi Andy, Im suprised yours if the injected style ?? Have you got a hilux or prado ??, I had the old Venturi on my 3.4 prado (only type available they told me) was the worst thing I ever did. i know others have already heard me whinge about the LPG, the advantage of a hilux is normally they leave the fuel tank in and just add the LPG tank either in the rear tray/utewell or stick it up under where the spare tyre goes, ""and refitting the old tank which gives me far greater touring range"" by the sounds of it you have a prado ?? saw gas was 80c the other day rip off bastards and it will go up from there so Im lead to believe. I will never have LPG again, Yes they suck LPG like there is no tomorrow when running in the sand, I wouldnt even get 200 out of mine on the beach , I use to run the LPG to get to the beach then the moment I hit the sand I went to petrol as it drank it and was noticably gutless. Personally if it is a prado and you intend doing any driving as in touring I would be putting the tank back in but that is just my opinion as I wont touch it again........had issues with stalling under braking, leaks, couldnt fill the reserve on hot days etc and the tank size was pitifull for a 4wd...........My whinge for the day lol.........Cheers Steve
