  • 2.7 engine starved for fuel, no acceleration

    Hi guys,

Yesterday I experienced a strange issue with my prado, 2.7.
I was towing a boat on to the on ramp of a freeway, I needed to get to speed quick, so the put foot down, revved the engine fairly high. All of a sudden it just seems to cut out, began slowing down. A put my foot on the clutch to see if the car was on, it was and still idled, as soon as I tried to accelerate, nothing, like it was getting no fuel. Lucky I also have an Lpg tank, so switch it lpg and thankfully off she goes. First time I've been happy to lpg in may car (I normally run it on petrol).

I pull over at a petrol station, sure enough starts and idles on petrol, but won't rev past 800-1000rpm. Runs fine on lpg. So fill up on lpg so I get to where I'm going. For interest I try switching to petrol about 30 minutes later, and it's working again!

any ideas,I was thinking pump had died, but I wouldn't have thought it would start?
    Thanks
    Evan

Not only the pump, could also be a few other things too, look at the fuel filter, could have a blockage, and look at any vac lines, could have fallen off, lastly could also be an electrical problem at the pump, ecu, or MAF.

Thanks for the tips, I've cleaned the maf once in the past as a precaution, but I wouldn't have thought that would cause it to stop all together, just run rough?

So far it's been running fine since, which I don't like it as I know there is a gremlin waiting to pounce :-/

I know that this is a little old but a similar thing happened to me a while ago. Thought that someone else may have the same problem in the future.
Shortly after a backfire when transfering to gas I tried to run on petrol and had the problem that when increasing revs that the car had no guts, ran fine on lpg. The problem was that a section of plastic had broken off inside the air filter. This had fortunately not been sucked up into the gas mixer but on acceleration the airflow caused the plastic to partialy block the airflow. After the plastic was removed the problem was fixed. Just thinking of the damage that would have been done if the piece hadn't remained in the filter. Ken.
