  • leaking fuel filter

Hi guys. Ive just done a service on my 90 series v6 petrol prado and the new fuel filter ive put in weeps on the outlet side of the filter. Its the same repco brand of filter that was on the car when I bought it, but I cant seem to be able to get it to stop weeping fuel. No fuel comes out sitting in the driveway, it only weeps when the car is running. Its not a lot just a small amount. How can I stop it from doing this? I tried putting the old filter back on and it weeps to.

The flared ends of the pipe ok ?? no shit cought up where the flared end goes into the filter ?? Cant remember on my old one but they don't have a washer (copper) do they ?? I'm pretty sure for memory the pipe just goes straight in and gets tightened by the threaded nut. I know you have to be careful not to strip the outer part of the nut if not using correct spanner. I cant for the life of me remember what the spanner is called it's like a ring spanner but has a cut out so it slips over the pipe so it doesn't damage the nut. Maybe undo it again and double check for any foreign material in the end and make sure the pipe is going in flush and the nut threads in very easily !! Not cross threaded I hope ??.......Cheers Steve

The metal pipes are ok.(I think), both ends look the same and the inlet doesn't leak. There is no washers at the joint.

I've pulled it apart and put it back together 5 times with varying results. May have to try another filter to see if that makes any difference.

Check the surfaces like Steve said, also make sure the pipe and nuts are going on straight. I had the same issue the first time I replaced mine, which was fixed by simply tightening it up further. Be careful not to damage the nut - use quality tools.

They do need to have the copper washers, so if you don't have them in, you need to put them in.

The filter in the supply line uses flare fittings and should not have nor need copper washers.
As has been said check for contaminents and tighten fully.

Mine is flared and I'm pretty sure it doesn't have washers. I wonder if there's different types.

                  Thanks for the tips guys..

Mine has the flared piping, i dint see any evidence of washers being in there. With out replacing that side of the pipe work, would some sort of sealant work on the treads to stop a weep?

Don't put any type of sealant on it, as that would cause more problems than what it fixes.

I tried to get a Z383 but my two local supercraps don't stock that filter.. I put in a Repco filter, i think its a RRF 59, I'll have to check the box in the bin.. It was the same that came off the car.

                          Hi,

I had a similar problem but it was due to whoever replaced my filter before me, the nut was done up too tight and had damaged the thread. Was obvious once you looked at the old filter. As it was the end that goes to the engine, ended up having to take it out, right up to the front and had to redo the thread (M14 1.5 from memory). I got a another Repco filter but ended up using a genuine filter and kept the Repco for a spare.

I think some service places done understand it doesnt need to have got almighty tension to work, just a firm fit. As others have said make sure the flange is seated well and doesnt have any crap on it.

Another possibility is that the flange may not be sitting against the filter, may need to slide the filter towards it a few mm to help it join up, there is some room for adjustment in the pipes.

                          Hope you work it out.
