Re: Fuel consumption... Petrol 90 series only

Just had a trip from Melbourne to Adelaide and got 14.61 L/100 on the trip over & 14.38 L/100 on the way back. Not too bad considering the bullbar, BFG AT's & a full car of kids & wife.

I getting a chip put in the prado this week so will be interested to see how that helps.

Re: Fuel consumption... Petrol 90 series only

I experemented using different spark plugs and different oils and found using denso plugs and valvoline engine armour gave me average of 12.9 / 100km ( I drive conservatvly not like the wife with lead foot which brings it around 15k ) as apose to 13.7 previously using ngk plugs and I forgot what oils but stand clear of bosch and champion plugs they were higher again .
I am going by memory on these figures had them stored on pc and lost when pc crashed .

As far as the kind of spark plugs that go into a Prado, I don't think much difference would amount, at least when they are in good condition, as the miles get on it can be a point of difference though, but certainly oils can make a difference. I'm using Shell Helix Plus 10W40. some might go for a heavier oil but heavier oil raises internal friction and in come cases causes oil shear so I stay with the makers recommendation thre.
I might sound like a walking advert for the brand, I'm not, it just worked out that way. After switching it in my old mazda 626 and it has almost cleared up a blockage in one of it's hydraulic tappets so I know it's got some good internal cleaning abilities.

I have all the major fuel brands handy except Caltex so if time permits might see how the big brands compare as far as Prado performance goes.
There is a diffrence in the formulations in these fuels and the concensus I see so far on other forums is that one brand might work well in one brand of engine and vice versa for the other, I'd say largely because of different burn rates. Toss of a coin really.
Doing a run to Nanango this weekend, so the Shell will get the first run because I have a docket.
Don't hold me to the figures though, not as if we're all doing this in a lab.

Re: Fuel consumption... Petrol 90 series only

Had the Prado chipped & on the dyno this week. I was told I would get between 10 & 20kw lift at the wheel and got 21.5kw lift so happy with that. You can really tell the difference in the power. I was also told I will get between 6 & 10% better fuel economy so I will update when I have run through a couple of tanks and see where its at. I also had the big main Toyota muffler removed and replaced with a simpler design which made an immediate effect to power as soon as it was done and also gives it a nice burble. Hopefully with the snorkel, muffler & chip, I should start seeing some better fuel economy. I already know it has more power.

That's good news Offroad. I'll be looking into that too.
Did my Nanango run, got 12.2l/100 on Optimax which was way better than the Freedom 95 considering there was hill work and I didn't drive like grandma either.
            very pleased

Hi offroad - can you provide more details on the chip you installed and what muffler setup you put in place of the Toyota one. Can you give us the cost for the chip install and dyno? 21.5 kW is a substantial increase - I'd be very keen to give that a try!!

I will take a photo of the muffler to show you. Basically I removed the large Toyota monstrosity in the centre and replaced that with a hotdog style (straight through) muffler in/out - $200 and we were done. To replace the Toyota muffler with a similar one was $450 and performance would not be as good.

Got the Unichip installed at Dynomotive in Bayswater VIC. They have a 4 wheel dyno which is great and cost was $1400 (cheapest I could find).

I also have a snorkel as well so it may be a combination of snorkel, muffler & chip which gives me the 21.5kw lift.

It is definitely performing a lot better now. I still haven't filled up since I had the chip & dyno but when I give it a couple of runs I will see how the fuel economy is going.

barely any difference, I would contribute it more to driving conditions rather than better fuel so Im sticking with 91 from now on.

                        Rossy,

I had already installed the snorkel & muffler before the chip & dyno. When I got the chip & dyno it was 50kw at the rear wheels & after the chip & dyno is now 71.5kw. Also achieved much better torque. It is like a different car to drive.

                        Cheers,

My prado is a daily driver covering about 70klm a day in urban and freeway conditions. We are averaging one camping/exploring trip per month.
Worst economy was 17ltrs 100 fully loaded on the crawl into HUGH Gorge in west Mcdonnald Ranges. Best economy of 12ltrs empty without cargo on hwy trip, no aircon.
Modds have made a difference. Some good some bad, Unfortunately the website wont alow me to post full XLS page of figures showing what has been done and effect of trips has to ecomomy.
Overall very happy. On the daily Commute im averaging bout 13 to 13.5ltrs per 100. Not to bad for raised, heavier 4WD with larger tyres driven in Traffic.

Just finished a trip with about 760 ks highway, 100 city and 100 beach on 91 RON. Switched back from 95 RON as pocket was burning. Woolies & Coles charge 9 cents more per litre but United only charges 6 cents more for 95 RON?!!!

                              Total litres 121.19
                              Ave 12.62 l/100km

Not sure if I should stick to 95 RON. Will do it if United is more competitive which they weren't last 6 months.

I'm consistently (over the past 5 refills) getting around 20L/100km. That's using 98 'Vortex'
