  • Fuel filters

I have a few questions on fuel filter for my 1999 3.4L Prado. Where is it located for this model ? How often should i change it ? Is it too frequent if it is replaced during every engine oil change ( in my case, I change full synthetic engine oil every 7000-9000 km )? Any particular brand would you guys recommend ?

    Thank you.

Passenger side of car approx halfway back. Just on the inside of the chassis rail. It should have a plastic guard covering it. The change intervals are 80,000km or every 48 weeks (so 1 year). So changing it every oil change is pure overkill. And at $50+ a pop an expensive exercise. Get under the car at some stage and just make sure you can undo the nut first because some mechanics like to do that sucker up super tight when the car is up on a hoist.

    I've always bought Ryco ones.

If you change your air filter every oil change as well that's a bit of overkill too for a petrol engine as they don't suck in anywhere near as much air as a diesel. Keep changing the oil & oil filter as you do which is good but tone the change intervals of the air and fuel filters back a bit. It's just extra money you don't need to spend.

Those nuts can be a real pain. Only just managed to get them off with my best flare-nut spanner. Dangerously, I heated the filter body up with a hot air gun - would never have come undone otherwise I reckon. Also, no cover on mine.
