  • 2.7 Prado/Hilux 3RZ, is it compatible?

    Hey Prado people,

I have a 1998 2.7 Prado that has a tiered engine with 330k's that's leaking to the extent were it's not drivable, I'm looking for a replacement but most ex-3rz motors come from Hilux's.

    My questions are:
    - Is an ex-Hilux motor compatible?
    - Is all electrical lugs, manifolds, etc the same?
    - Is the ECU the same?
    - Dose the motor have to be the same year (98) either ex-Prado or Hilux?
    - Anything else that I have foreseen?

A rebuilt motor is also something I have considered but I have done my research and the overall opinion of rebuilds dose not inspire much confidence in me, an OEM used motor from Toyota seems to be a safe investment compared to spending the extra $$$ for a rebuild that might only last 40k, am I right? Dose anyone know of a reputable place that make reliable rebuilt 3RZ motors? If anyone can answer any of these questions please leave a massage!

    Thanks, Elmo

I've never owned a 3RZ powered car but like most things Toyota, the short and even a long block would be very similar across the board so you could probably rip all the gear off your engine and put it all on a rebuilt/low kays engine of similar vintage.

I certainly doubt the ECU and all the electrical components around the engine are exactly the same as different vehicle have various components in different positions on the engine to suit the particular engine bay. If you can get hold of the Toyota EPC either on CD or online you can certainly compare your engine's core components to the model of engine you're looking at Hilux). There's a good chance the base long motors are very similar.

The various jap import companies around Australia would also certainly know the answer to some of your questions too.

You mention it is leaking making it undriveable. Do you mean it has a lot blow-by. These are pretty tough engines I'm led to believe. Has it had a compression test?
