  • Snorkels

I have a 90 series Prado, 3400 Petrol , also on Gas, thinking about fitting a snorkel to it, both companies I have called have mentioned that it may require an air balance pipe, or something like that, but neither had fitted a snorkel to a Prado on Gas and weren't very confident, has anyone got a Prado on Gas with a snorkel?, and are there any issues I should look out for?, cheers Danno

    Re: Snorkels

    Hey Danno,

i have the same vehicle, ie 3.4 on lpg, and assumed that i could fit a snorkel. now you've got me thinking. so i have sent an email off to my mechanic (4wd club director and lpg installer) to see what his thoughts are.

will let you know his answer

by the way, where are you located?

    regards Tony

          Re: Snorkels

          Hi Danno,

here is the response from my mechanic

          "Gday

I would have to check where the snorkel enters the engine bay as often they are designed for diesel vehicles and the airbox is in a different location.

But depending on the type of LPG system used there is no real problem to the performance , they run quite well. It does require the use of a Balance line between the LPG Convertor and Air Intake and a little bit of adjustment to fuel mixtures. This prevents the car stalling when coming to a stop or turning a corner. We have fitted many LPG systems to Patrols, Cruisers, Rodeos and Navaras with Snorkles and they work well."

            Re: Snorkels

This is brings up an interesting point.....

I'm aware that LPG & snorkels don't work together because you tune the gas when the car is stationary but when it is driving the extra air affects the mix & can cause the car to splutter & stall.

The interesting thing is that a snorkel is not meant to be able to assist greatly in fuel consumption or power, does this just mean that LPG systems are really very sensitive to the amount of air coming in?

            Cheers

              Re: Snorkels

A cheep way to fix the problem short term while waiting to get a balance pipe installed (if you already have LPG and no balance pipe) is to turn the snorkle head to the side or backwards so that air is not rammed down the snorkle.
Had the same problem on the *cough cough* patrol when i owned one years ago and this is how i got around it
