  • Fan Blasting Away All The Time

    Hi all
Just wondering if its just my car or everyones car does it. My centrfical fan locks on evertime i leave a set of lights for a bit and its a bit annoying. It got stuck a while back and stayed on all the time which really sucked, so i replaced it with one that i was told was right. Turns out the halfway in the middle of no where it wasn't and the fan wasn't staying on at all. Very hot on the temp gauge caused me to stop for a while to let her cool.
Anyway just wondering if everyones cars do this cause my new fan does too
    cheers

It cost @120 to get your radiator out and rodded. The fan is on when you are stationary because the the cooling system is heating up. I would start with your radiator. My one was just slightly blocked and fan kicked in on long hills and the temp went up.

New radiator and all good. I didnt rod the old one because I bought a chinese one cheap that did the job

The fan should be turning all the time, as it is a viscous coupled fan, if your having overheating problems then it could be that the viscous fluid in the fan is rooted.

Yes croozza but you shouldn't hear it until the viscous coupling has locked.

I must say I have just returned from a 3000km trip to Fraser & I didn't hear mine once! I had the water temp up to 98 degrees, but the gauge didn't move at all. This was after towing a 120 series with a caravan 20 meters or so thru the soft sand at inskip point (after 5 or 6 attempts).

Somethings not right if its doing this in winter & I got to say it doesn't happen to me even in summer up passed 40 degrees.

A falcon or a commodore in summer yes, you will hear them at the lights with their electric fans running, but the Prado shouldn't do it.

Does your gauge move at all? On hills at all? My gauge sits below half, the pointer crosses over the bottom of the temperature symbol.

Are you loosing water.....(is the overflow overflowing?)

I would suggest a visit to a radiator place, they can do a cooling test to see what the problem may be.

You say you have a new fan, is it a Toyota one suited for your car or an "equivalent"......

        Cheers

Re: Fan Blasting Away All The Time

I hear mine all the time, even with a cold start, then it gets quieter after about 20 seconds when the viscous fluid has warmed up. The temp on mine never moves off of just under 1/2 even if I'm towing heavy items, ie car trailer with a Patrol on it.
I have seen on many occations someone pulling there hair out trying to find the cause of the overheating, and after replacing just about every part, they try a different fan coupling and it solves the problem.

not to discount the clogged radiator, but there could be too much fluid in the fan hub.
This causes the same symtoms as mentioned by the OP
