  • Air Filter Assembly Retaining Clips

Ok, so this is something I've been missing since I bought the vehicle but now that the snorkel is installed I thought I should do something about it...

I am missing one of the three metal retaining clips that holds the air filter housing closed. Two is quite secure but I'd like to get a third (and possibly 1 or 2 spares) none-the-less. Of course, Toyota doesn't sell them individually, you need to buy the housing as a whole (BIG $$$) and the cheapest second hand housing cover I could locate was $280 (still a lot of $$$ for only needing one clip). I've had no luck with eBay or UES either. I have also called all the wreckers in the ACT / Queanbeyan area with no luck.

So, does anyone know where I could source these clips from without resorting to the next 90 Series I see in a carpark at the shopping centre? :P I am at the point now where I will probably just wire that third point up (I carry tie wire in my tool kit) but would prefer to find the clips.

All suggestions welcome or if anyone by chance has these clips laying round and doesn't want / need them, let me know, or maybe knows someone wrecking a 90 Series.

    Thanks!

No way I'd pay hundreds for something like that. I had to replace a damaged air box on a previous car and I just looked in the papers/online for wrecked vehicles, eventually a private one turned up, and we swaped them over for something like $10.

In the mean time, wire it up so there's no urgency.

You can always do what the bad people do, and that is to take another Prado for a test drive, stop up the road and pop the bonnet, take the clip off that you need, take the car back to the dealer and give an excuse as to not want the car, and then you will have a new clip for your car. But you didn't hear it from me.....lol

Re: Air Filter Assembly Retaining Clips

Ok, so I spent a good portion of the morning contacting Toyota Wreckers around Australia via their online enquiries. Still waiting for responses.

While I waited I thought I'd pop out to one of the local wreckers over lunch. This is one of the guys I contacted on Tuesday and he told me he had no Landcruisers and/or Prado's in the lot but he'd be more then happy for me to wonder through and see if there was anything that might suit my needs.

Got in there and pulled one of the 2 remaining clips from my air filter housing and wandered on in, I showed it to the owner at the counter, he looked, paused and said "try the Ford Falcons, out this door, turn left, head up to the fence and they are lined up there. They should be the same or f***ing close. If not, wander 'round and see what you can find". So I wander through to the yard thinking, no hope. I kept my eyes open taking note of the types of cars I was walking by so I knew my best opportunities to come back to. Well I found the Falcons, suck my head under the hood of the first one I came to (a fairly recent model) and wouldn't you know it ... EXACTLY THE SAME! I took all 4 (that gives me 3 spares ... just in case) from the car and head back into the office. The guy simply said "good guess hey" .... ah Ya Think?! He asked for a gold coin donation as payment so I slipped him a 5er for saving me a lot of heart ache searching. At a little over $1 per clip that's a hell of a lot better then $280 for a used housing!!

So if anyone in the Canberra area is in need of parts for any car they own, I can recommend Queanbeyan Auto Dismantlers.

Great stuff! I need to get some clips for my radiator surround at some stage - a few are broken. I might do the same, never know what other vehicles use them.
